listen. I'm trying.

February crafting goals - most of my supplies are packed up and at my parents but I still have spinning fiber, sewing supplies and a fleece to work on plus I should have less time for crafting in the next two months. plus the sweater
  • spin whatever I want! alpaca or wool or cotton or all of them - all of the above! Worked on the alpaca a little bit, finished and plyed 8 oz of wool and plyed another 4oz. Did some spindling. Coned some fibers to get them off the bobbins
  • knit sweater - made significant progress on the sleeves while traveling
  • process fleece - made significant process on the bag. Probably 1/2-2/3 done with it. wild that if you work on something every day, even just a little, you make progress. I have fulled filled my first small bin, so now onto the second
  • Work on coat mockup - mockup done, adjustments made to pattern
  • Sew something else - started working on coat

coat mockup
A very bulky coat mockup of green fabric and grey fabric with a rounded white pattern is flopped across a table.

March goals
  • Knit the sweater
  • Process the fleece
  • Finish spinning the current alpaca bobbin, wind it off and pack up wheel. Skein yarn on bobbins. Spin more laying in bed
  • Sew coat - this is currently in the handstitching the interfacing and wool layers together mostly during craft nights

January Crafting Goals
  • spin alpaca and finish plying the stuff sitting around - worked on the alpaca, plyed a bunch of yarns and skeined them. started a new spin
  • Figure out what to do with all the samples I've had sitting around forever that I'm not looking at - I think singles and maybe 2 ply will be weft in a weaving project, 3 ply will be some kind of wild colorwork, but they all got packed away for the move
  • Knit sweater - made a bunch of progress on the sleeves while I was at my parents since it was the only project i brought
  • Finish woven rug and warp new project - finished the rug including knotting fringe. Decided not to warp new project and just get the loom ready for the move
  • process fleece - I've been working on this daily while at home and it's going well!
  • work on coat mockup - sewed a fucked up double welt pocket but I'm making progress
  • sew other projects - made myself a bag for the SCA event including weaving a strap - very last minute
  • Secret project - made myself a blue linen tunic and wool overcoat for my first SCA event
Plyed yarns skeined and drying, these were mostly spun and discussed in the December post

Five skeins of yarn in different colors are draped over the bars of clothes drying rack.

I received a beautiful mohair fleece from [personal profile] reedrover at Giant Cricket Farm, who raises colored Angora goats, during Rhinebeck 2023. It was from her Angora goat Marla and it was a beautiful tan color. I decided that I would make a garment from this fleece in a year, with the goal to have it done by Rhinebeck 2024. The fleece was 3 lbs, 10 ounces.

A beautiful, shiny pile of mohair locks, tan color, incredibly shiny and wavy.
this is long and has lots of photos )

The waistcoat is laying closed on a mesh table. It is tan and shiny, with just a tiny bit of green back showing at the shoulders. The lining is a plaid grey and blue.

The same waistcoat but it has been opened so the grey and blue plaid lining is visible.

December crafting goals
  • finish the color spin I've got and get back to working on the alpaca. spin some other stuff - finished the color spin, spun another 14 oz of yarn and finished a bobbin of the alpaca, plyed some things too
  • finish knitting the hat - finished!
  • crochet a dice bag for my sister - crocheted two!
  • sew the purse for my mom - did it! she loves it!
  • work on coat mockup - got it all cut out, interfacing attached, just about started piecing it
  • weave rug - worked on it!
  • process fleece - worked on it!
  • Other - sewed a bag for my SIL, mostly wrote the waistcoat post, wove three tablet woven bands, two for the bags. Prototyped my Dad's gift of ratchet strap bags and made gift bags out of fabric for all the gifts
Color spin! It was 2 ounces each of six color of roving from Green Goat Ranch in their A Midwinter's Nights Dream colorways, which are grey overdyed to make the colors a bit muted which I loved. I don't know what I'm doing with it yet, I think some kind of weaving project, but I didn't spin it for weaving as a single, so I'd need to ply it if it was to be used as warp and I don't really have a ton of it, so I'd need to add some other yarn which I don't have. So it's taking up bobbin space right now and I need to figure something out.

Six colors of roving, one already spun on the wheel, the rest still in braids. The colors are deep red, light red, orange, green, blue, purple.
this is a ton of stuff and pictures )
Whew, that was a lot.

listen. time has occurred.

August goals
  • spin things! - I have spun things! I have still been making slow progress on cotton spindling. I spun up 8oz of something white and shiny from stash, needs to be plyed. I am 5/6 of the way through a six color spin on my electric wheel. it's too messy to spin in bed. I pushed my current wheeel project, over a pound of brown alpaca destined for a blanket to the side to get this spin done. also finished a red, green, grey spin that took me ages, no picture because I just didn't take one and it's across the room.
  • knit sweater - worked on it, I've got both sleeves picked up and am working both at once! and paused to knit a hat for a gift
  • weave sample and get the main project warped - samples woven, project adjusted, woven and most cut off the loom and washed. I did a time tracking on this project for fun and it took me 1 hour to wind and weave 8 bobbins of yarn, which made 27 inches of fabric on the loom. solid. so I really whipped through the weaving on this.
  • twist fringe on pink shawl for sale - gave up on this
  • finish the waistcoat - Finished! Will get a separate post soon
  • work on great wheel - lol no
  • woodwork a few things - pegs for great wheel, tall storage thing for weaving supplies - did make tall storage thing out of wood, works great
  • other stuff done: wove a tablet band, wove a little message band for a friend, have another on the loom, cut and sewed a bunch of tablet woven bands into keyfobs, participated in the weaver's guild show and sale, washed one fleece, sewed a very comfortable giant hoodie, repaired my slippers, mockup of a purse done for my mom's christmas gift, started cutting fabric for the real one, started a mockup for a fancy coat for myself
something white and shiny from stash. I don't remember what it is, I think pencil roving from a local farm. maybe romney/wensleydale? I can't remember and my notebook with the info is across the room. 8oz, still needs to be plyed

A wooden wheel bobbin full of shiny white singles yarn that has a halo.

July goals
  • Spin the CVM - done! Just finished it on the 30th, it took me about a month to spin 3oz. Started another spinning project that is 4oz of combed top to spin on my electric wheel around. Also just started 8oz of Romney roving on the CPW. Did some Tour de Fleece spinning, where my goal was to spin every day, which I did, mostly on my spindle spinning of cotton
  • Knit sweater - worked on it a tiny bit
  • twist fringe on shawl for guild sale - did the yellow one, working on the pink one, bought a fringe twister because it was getting tedious
  • finish weaving on the loom and start warping next project - finished! Got the sample for the next one almost on the loom
  • work on tablet weaving - cut the project off the loom, it really wasn't working, don't weave with upholstry thread, wove three other little bands
  • Sew the waistcoat - almost done! just buttons to go
  • wash a fleece? - nope
  • process fleece - worked on it
  • engage in shenanigans (already happening >:) I went out and collected some nettles and invasive phragmites from the swamp this morning) - no more shenanigans but I might do this again soon. And I acquired a great wheel :) :) :)
The fluffy clouds of 3oz of CVM that I combed, I bought it from Clemes & Clemes Good Clean Fiber. It's just got a little bit of variation of color, which is neat although it's really only noticable in the yarn. Spun extremely fine which was kinda fun even though it took all month. Don't have yardage yet, I'm going to put it on a cone for weaving to see what kind of fabric a singles finewool will make. 64 wpi.

A picture taken in a plastic bag holding fiber and the fiber is shadowy and fluffy balls of white and off white fiber.

June crafting goals
  • Spin! finish the 6oz spin, and spin something else - 6 oz completed and I also spun and plyed 8oz of roving from Giant Cricket Farm to use as weft to finish the mohair warp on the loom, started 3oz of hand combed CVM from fleece and my goodness finewools are pretty
  • knit sweater - worked on it a little
  • start a crochet project? - nope
  • get the tablet weaving done, it's just sitting - worked on it a little
  • weave! get it off the loom? - got it off the loom! got it wet finished and also wet finished another older weaving project that has been sitting
  • Buy sewing supplies - all bought! thread was buy 3 get 3 free at joanns, so I bought a bunch, also bought fancy horn buttons, crafting hangout helped me pick out which fabric to use with the waistcoat
  • Wash fleece maybe with a new setup? - nope but setup ideas are all worked out, so I might actually get to it
  • process fleece - worked on it
  • Other - finish some things to put in the guild show and sale by twisting fringe, ended up buying a fringe twister, made some tiny cordage
I apparently don't have any pictures of the finished 6oz of fiber on the bobbins, but I left it as singles and I'm going to weave with it, so I put it on a cone yesterday. 1500 yards in 6oz. This is Wensleydale Angora blend roving that I got from a destash on Ravelry and it's hella shiny

A cone of singles yarn, it is a dark grey and it is really shiny.

May crafting goals
  • spin! currently 4oz of Romney on the wheel, maybe I'll do another weaving yarn, high twist for warp? (write about cotton spinning) - I spun the 4oz of Romney, started 6 oz and finished 3 of it of blended Wensleydale/Angora for warp. Cotton!
  • ply, skein and wash yarns sitting around - done! They are finishing drying today and I'll put their labels on and put them away
  • knit sweater - worked on it! making progress, just seamed the shoulders together and will be starting the sleeves shortly
  • start a crochet project? - nope
  • wash a fleece? - nope and picked up four more during shearing season
  • process fleece - worked on it a little
  • work on tablet weaving project and get it off the warping board - haha no
  • Get weaving! - warped, got the warp on the loom and am weaving!
  • muslin of waistcoat - needs to be done before weaving finishes so uhh - done! also in sewing related news, I picked up a bunch of sewing yardage from an out of business tailoring company, so I can use that for fancy things!
Cotton spinning! This was my first time spinning cotton and I started with 25g of Egyptian cotton from Hearthside Fibers Plant based sampler. I spun it on my supported spindle and I really enjoyed it once I got the hang of it. It's definitely similar to long draw wool in some ways but it's so short and fine that you need a lot of twist to make it go right. This was also very slick, so I had to either card it into punis or make tiny "punis" by hand, by taking a bundle of the top, ripping into into little 3/4 inch long, stacking them up and pulling them out sideways and rolling them a little. Now that I've started another cotton spin, I realized that this was perhaps learning on hard mode.

  • spin mohair, finishing it would be a stretch - spun! Didn't finish it but I'm one bobbin away from finishing. Also spun 4 oz of top and chain plyed it. started another top spin but it's not done yet
  • finish mittens - finished them and then had to rip the second thumb back out since it was too tight, haven't finished it yet
  • knit sweater - made progress, almost done with the back, broke two circular needles :/
  • cone up alpaca - CONED, so much fun to use
  • process the rest of the brown alpaca fleece? - worked on it, close to done
  • sew pullover - sewn!
  • tablet weaving - make a loom for this? - found my weaving notebook, finished the languishing project, did one small weaving project for a friend, started a larger more complicated one
  • other - washed three fleeces, I'm trying to get them all washed so I have less raw fleeces sitting around forever.
I did a lot of crafting, lots of things in progress. Basically no reading done, so I'll combine March and April reading.

Pullover made, I love it. It's light, it's stretchy, it's comfy. I want to make more at some point. Pattern is Jackson Pullover by Helen's Closet. Terrible picture!

A terrible picture in bad lighting of a black pullover laying flat on a table.

April Goals
This month is busy so idek what I'll get done.
  • finish the mohair, ply and cone up
  • finish the purple spin
  • Skein and wash spins, cone up weaving yarns
  • finish the current alpaca fleece processing
  • start processing a new fleece?
  • knit sweater
  • finish crochet mittens - just the thumb!
  • work on tablet weaving project
  • get mohair on the loom? might be a stretch
  • Start muslin for vest

February goals
  • Spin mohair - three bobbins done, all around 5oz, so I might be halfway?
  • crochet mittens - allllmost done, just need to bind off the top of the mitten and do the thumb
  • knit sweater - making progress, split at the sleeves and now knitting the back section flat, I have remembered how to knit with both hands, so I don't need to turn it which is nice
  • finish weaving project - DONE
  • start processing alpaca fleece - started!
  • spin more samples - I think I spun all of them!
  • Cone winder alpaca, masham, skein rainbow, label - decided to wash the alpaca before cone because it was dirty, I didn't do a great job washing the fleece. Skeined it and gave it a hot wash with soap and it looks waaaay better. Now I need to figure out how to get it onto the cone since I don't have a swift. Probably drape it over my knees and wind it onto my electric wheel, probably good to give it a tiny bit more twist in some areas. Washed all the other skeins and they're now drying
  • start sewing jersey - muslin? or just go for it? - made a muslin, working on real pullover now
  • tablet weaving project darn it - someday I'll do this

The cloth! It is very heavy, around 6 pounds for ~7.5 yards of fabric that is 30 inches wide. It will become a coat someday, potentially even a really neat fancy one. I have no idea how I'm going to wet finish it, it's so long and heavy. I'm very pleased with it.

A giant pile of heavy grey cloth, twill pattern.

I got SO MUCH done!

January Goals
  • finish alpaca, skein, wash and label new yarns, ply Masham on spindles - Alpaca singles finished and as of 1/31, they were 2/3 plyed and I finished that today (2/2), so the pictures will go in february's update post. I skeined and labeled the yarns, just waiting for a bath. I didn't ply the Masham because I'm going to use it as singles for weaving, not sure what project yet but plying them made them look terrible, so they're sitting around waiting for the inaugural run of the cone winder. I spun 8 oz of combed top from Wild Hare Fibers. I started working on my sampler packs again, got 25g each spun of roseplant fibers, seacell, tencel. Started spinning the mohair fleece and almost a bobbin done! I also plyed 8 ounces of merino blend in purple as a two ply
  • finish combing mohair fleece (stretch goal but might happen) - DONE WOOO, started spinning it and it took a bit to figure out the best way to hold it and spin from the blobs I made
  • crochet mittens - worked on it
  • get weaving project on the loom - on the loom! and 2/3 done weaving!
  • work on tablet weaving project - nope
  • continue 100 days of spindle spinning - yep and started spinning cotton on my supported spindle! I think I missed two days in January
  • wash a fleece? - haha no
  • buy more fabric for muslins and find another project to start - bought more actual fabric and then was given a bunch of random fabric, project is a pullover shirt
  • Other stuff - got a lot of knitting done on my sweater with all the meetings I've been having, started the arm gussets and had to buy the pattern book again because I lost it somewhere and buying a new one hasn't made it reappear so it's really lost somewhere
Whew, a lot happened.

Alpaca singles! These were hard to spin and have been on the wheel since August. 24 ounces, so a large amount but still not the most enjoyable spin. It required precisely the right amount of pull from the wheel and twist going in as I drafted. It probably would have been fine on my big wheel, but the first layer of the bobbin, it pulls like a work horse and it kept breaking the yarn, so little wheel it was. This will be weft for a blanket with a brown alpaca fleece being the warp. That fleece isn't processed yet, but that's next. This will also be the first run on the cone winder since it's for weaving. I just finished plying these today so those pictures will be in February's post

  • finish weaving project
  • start processing alpaca fleece
  • spin more samples
  • Cone winder alpaca, masham, skein rainbow, label
  • start sewing jersey - muslin? or just go for it?

I'm not doing a year end review but if you're interested in what I worked on in the past year, this tag has all my monthly posts

December goals
  • spin alpaca, skein, wash and label yarns - spun alpaca, getting close to the end, I did skein, wash and label the yarns I had sitting around. I also spun the other 6 oz of merino just as plain singles (no picture), and then spun 8 ounces of dyed braids in like, six days over christmas which is bonkers fast and then chain plyed them in the last two days. Also finished a spindle spinning project, will update in January when I ply
  • knit mittens for gift - my god I've never knit do fast in my life although it helps to have thick yarn or to hold the yarn doubled. three pairs of mittens knitted, two out of the reinforced merino, one pair full, one pair fingerless and one pair out of yarn held double
  • crochet mittens - nope
  • tablet weave gift - nope
  • finish weaving current project and maybe warp on new project - finished weaving it fast and finished it! warping on new project didn't happen since it was a 7 yard warp and my warping board only fit 4.5 yards. I made new sections for the board to be longer
  • mohair garment in a year - currently combing fleece - did a lot of combing in December
  • 100 days of spindle spinning - starting Dec 1st, based on instagram - this is going great! I finished one spindle stick and am halfway on a second, only missed one day
  • work on quilted jacket - done!
  • wash a fleece? - lol no
So many pictures for the wild amount of things I finished! )January goals
  • finish alpaca, skein, wash and label new yarns, ply Masham on spindles
  • finish combing mohair fleece (stretch goal but might happen)
  • crochet mittens
  • get weaving project on the loom
  • work on tablet weaving project
  • continue 100 days of spindle spinning
  • wash a fleece?
  • buy more fabric for muslins and find another project to start

November crafting goals
  • spin alpaca, skein, wash and label yarns - spun another bobbin of alpaca, ~10 of 24oz spun. Didn't do the other stuff. Did finish the singles of my traveling spindle project which has been on the spindle for at least two years now. Almost forgot about the merino roving whoops. I spun up and plyed about 8 oz of merino blend roving to make mittens for my sister for Christmas, details below
  • knit on sweater - knitted some
  • crochet mittens - finished one mitten, working on the second. I need to figure out how I'm going to add the fleece lining
  • chart tablet woven bands for gifts, finish current band and start gift bands - I think I worked on it a bit but haven't finished the current band or done the other stuff
  • warp new weaving project - warped, threaded, sleyed and weaving! I'm about halfway done the actual weaving and it looks cool as hell but I'm going to wait to post pictures until I finish
  • process fleece - worked on the mohair which is now at the top of the line
  • wash one sheep fleece and the mohair fleece - done! I washed a merino fleece without felting it at all and the mohair fleece (mohair fleece needed so many rinses)
  • Work on jacket - quilted the jacket pieces but stalled out when I realized I don't own sewing scissors and need to get some to cut through the three layers.
Only one photo this time since I didn't really finish much.
This is the merino blend roving. I got it as a gift from my mom two or so years ago. I don't actually know where she got it but it's very commercial top blend of merino and like, bamboo or silk or something. Not my taste. I spun another similar blend that she got me into yarn that I gave away to a friend. But Z liked the color and I like a challenge so I spun it up. The mittens are going to be fingerless mitts so Z can use them at work, so they also need to be durable, unlike merino blends which are soft and pill and make a mess. So I took the two ply Coopworth that I spun up extremely fine and hard, and spun it into the singles with a lot of twist to give it strength and structure. I knitted a couple of rows to make sure it would retain enough elasticity (it did) and then spun the rest and have started knitting already. The merino blend mostly had the coopworth embedded in it, not like a corespun or coiled yarn. It's basically impossible to see because it's black and the blend is so dark. You also can't feel it in the plyed yarn which is super cool. The yarn is slightly thicker than worsted so I'm making a lot of progress on the mittens very quickly (for me). Lots of ply twist and I narrowly won bobbin chicken. If the mittens start to have wear, it should just be the merino blend that wears off but the structural integrity of the mittens should be fine because of the coopworth inside, so it should be easily re-lined if it all wears away.

A super squishy squashy bobbin of yarn. It is a dark, shimmery purple black color.

December goals
  • spin alpaca, skein, wash and label yarns
  • knit mittens for gift
  • crochet mittens
  • tablet weave gift
  • finish weaving current project and maybe warp on new project
  • mohair garment in a year - currently combing fleece
  • 100 days of spindle spinning - starting Dec 1st, based on instagram
  • work on quilted jacket
  • wash a fleece?

Saturday I got some fleeces washed. Well, one and a half. Better than none! I put the mohair fleece in two baskets to soak and one pound of merino fleece from last year's New England Fiber Festival to soak, then ran out for dog food and an estate sale where I scored a nice workbench, a very nice vice for $50, and a bunch of assorted hand tools. Very pleased with the vice. I'm going to work on the shed in the next two weeks, get it cleaned up and start building some brackets to hold wood and a workbench that goes over the wood. I want to turn it into a workshop since the basement really hasn't been working for that.

Came home and in between baking, I washed the mohair and scoured the merino. I also made granola, gingersnaps and yogurt. In the future, I won't bake while doing this because I had to wash my hands a lot in between everything. For the mohair, I used hot tap water (120F) for the soak, then hot tap water with soap, then two hot tap water rinses. I let the last one cool, then did six (6!!!), cold water rinses until the water was clear. To be fair, the cold water rinses were plopping the basket back in the bin, using the shower nozzle on the hose until the fleece was completely covered in water, then removing the fleece and dumping the water again.

boy howdy I rambled on fleece washing )

Sunday, I went to New England Fiber Festival. I went primarily to help a vendor friend pack up her booth, but decided to spend the whole day there. It's a wonderful festival, it's indoors, really accessible for wheelchairs since the parking lot and all areas are level concrete or pavement. The aisles are really wide, the booths are all pretty spacious and it's not super crowded at least on Sunday. There's a decent amount of seating around, both benches and places to sit and eat. It's very chill, especially in comparison to Rhinebeck. Lots more chances to talk to vendors.

NEFF rambling )

I spent most of crafting last night quilting the jacket pieces, I only have the back left to go. I also got advice on my next weaving project, making it wide since I couldn't decide wide or narrow. I got all the bins cleaned up since it rained overnight and actually had success with my indigo processing. I finished running the water through a piece of cloth and now I have some gooey indigo. Not a lot but better than zero considering I didn't know what I was really doing. I think I could have let the plants ferment more but ah well.

I'm leaving for a work trip first thing tomorrow morning and getting back late Thursday so I'm going to miss my weaver's guild meeting which makes me sad.

October goals
  • Spin alpaca and wash, skein and label yarns - spun another bobbin of alpaca, making progress. didn't do the other stuff. Did spin 10oz of Icelandic fleece (that I sheared!) that was carded to combine the inner and outer coats. Need to decide if plying or leaving as singles.
  • knit sweater - worked on it
  • crochet mittens - worked on it a little bit
  • weave on the big loom! maybe get it all woven? - WOVEN and off the loom! not wet finished though
  • process indigo plants - did this, mixed success I think. I might not have fermented enough but I have a lead on a book that should tell me how this works
  • finish blog post - lol no
  • work on a fleece - I carded the 10oz Icelandic fleece and started combing the Cotswold/Dorset cross fleece that I have a lot of
  • warp a tablet woven band to try weaving words (Please Weave a Message is the book title) (the words will be swear words because why not) -started this! I wove to the letter h so far, need to flip cards and finish the alphabet. Figured out how to tell if needing to go forwards or backwards by sight rather than by drafting on the graphing.
  • Other things done but not planned for - cut and hand basted jacket muslin, decided to make a button down shirt from the mohair fleece I was given - the goal is to finish it by next Rhinebeck if possible so I could wear it
Pictures!

Weaving! It's a 2.5 yard warp, so not super long and it wove up pretty fast once I got rolling. The neat thing about this pattern was that if I had threaded it in 1-2-3-4, and treadled the pattern, it would have made herringbone. But because of the threading pattern 1-2-3-4-3-2-1-4-3-2-3-4, when I treadled it, it came out as diamonds and I love it so much, easy treadling to remember too. It still needs wet finishing.

A small pile of cloth is spread out on the table.

It's been a few years since I went to NY Sheep and Wool, I think 2018 maybe was the last time. For various reasons I haven't been back since then.

Earlier this week, I messaged [personal profile] reedrover who takes her goats to the Northeast Angora Goat Show to show and figured I could meet up with her and chat for a bit. I've had great luck meeting internet friends and I figured this would be fun. A day or two before, she asked if I could help hold goats during the show as some of the folks' usual helpers hadn't been able to make it. Sure! Goats are fun! I ramble a lot )

Haul!

RR gave me a beautiful tan mohair fleece, it's so pretty!!!! I'm definitely going to comb it but I've been thinking through what to make with it. I think it would make great weaving yarn but I may also do some crocheting with it too. I've got some mohair I got in a destash that I could use it with too. I really should try tablet weaving with it too, omg the shine would be great on a plain band. hmmmmmm.

A pile of lucious, glowing, shiny tan locks fill the whole picture.

  • spinning - I think I'm formulating a weaving idea to spin, but I'm not 100% sure I'll do that yet right now. So spin something, chain ply Pansy Pandemonium and skein/wash/label everything - chain plyed the whole pound of Pansy Pandemonium, spun 4oz of Soay? and 4 oz of Gulf Coast or Navajo Churro? (no picture of this, I only took blurry photos of it apparently), skeined three things and half of Pansy. Started spinning 24 oz of carded rolags of white alpaca from fleece, but need to switch to my flax wheel, the CPW is too fast for it
  • knit the new sweater - worked on it, very happy with how it's coming out. It'll be a little bit but that's okay.
  • crochet the second pair of mittens - worked on it a little
  • finish the tablet weaving -  close to done
  • finish tying heddles and thread the loom and reed and then weave jeez - heddles all tied, more than half put on the loom
  • finish the alpaca fleece - nope, but came up with the plan for this. Softest bits that I carded and combed will be spun into probably 2 ply and woven into scarves, one will be a gift maybe. I should get two nice long ones out of it. Card up the rest of the coarser stuff, 2 ply and then weave with the white alpaca that I just started spinning
  • wash a fleece - nope
  • write one post about fiber arts stuff -  I have at least three things I want to write up, the plaid, the romney singles weaving, using fishing swivels with a backstrap loom - nope
Well, I didn't get that much done overall but lots of spinning. So that works I guess. I also have been doing more outside work, harvesting flowers from the garden, processing over 100 ears of corn (last night), processing chickpea seed. I'm writing this at my parents, where I took some pictures of the skeins before I left but who knows if I have all the photos.

Chain plyed Pansy Pandemonium, I took this photo of half of it on the reel. I measured this out so I could get information on how much I would have to use as warp, then balled it right from the reel. It's going to be plain woven with the other 8oz and it should come out long enough that I can cut it in half and sew the two sections together for a blanket. If I ever get the other project of the loom, this is next.

Chain plyed blue, yellow and white yarn is wrapped around the pegs of a reel.

Skeined yarns. I skeined up the mystery purple wool as a two ply with itself with 4 oz (bottom skein), then plyed the other 4 oz with white montadale for a barberpole yarn (middle skein), the possibly soay yarn is singles since I didn't really know what to do with it. I may take it and all the other random rustic yarns, spin a lot of consistent color warp and weave a lot of cloth for some kind of big fancy wool coat.

A pile of yarns in skeins but not twisted are plopped on top of a home depot 5 gallon bucket.

September goals
  • Spin alpaca and ply, wash and label skeined yarns
  • knit sweater
  • crochet mittens
  • get the damn heddles on the loom, then thread heddles, then sley dent and weave. By end of Sept I will be throwing the shuttle
  • work on a fleece
  • wash a fleece?
  • write a blog post?

July Goals - despite my wrist preventing me from crafting for several weeks, I still got a lot done and I'm very happy it's back to normal. I'd say most of this is just finishing things that were mostly done so it's not as impressive as it looks but progress was made. I wish there was a fun spinning event like Tour de Fleece during the winter, but alas.
  • spinning - work on Pansy Pandemonium. I doubt I'll finish the 6oz in July but that's okay. maybe spin some more samplers on the eel wheel - all spun up! Nothing else spun but I started spinning something last night
  • knitting - finish the sweater and get B to take actual nice photos of me wearing it - sweater finished! Crappy photo below. New sweater started
  • finish the tablet weaving - done! I also did two more small bands and started one more that's almost done
  • warp and weave the wool singles cloth - ugh. warped, beamed and stuck at threading the heddles since I don't have enough heddles yet. I'm halfway through tying more
  • process fleece - now that I typed that all up above, I think I'm going to switch to carding the alpaca and comb a sheep fleece - carded almost all of the remaining super soft section of the fleece, just a little more to go.
  • dye something???? - lol no
  • wash a fleece - I washed a small fleece! An icelandic sheep that I sheared. I think it will be a carded and spun fleece since the undercoat is so short, I did a tiny sample.
Pansy Pandimonium! It is superwash Targhee commercial combed top, dyed by Llady Llama Fiber, a pound of it spun up. I will chain ply it to keep the color repeats intact and it will someday go on the loom for a squishy blanket or something.

Four bobbins of fiber on a wooden background. The fiber changes from blue to yellow.

April Goals (and May, and June)
  • Spin something and ply the Montadale - I spun 8 oz of purple mystery wool and plyed 4 oz of purple with the montadale and then plyed the other 4 oz together. I also spun 4 oz North Ronaldsey roving which is going to be some sort of weaving thing combined with a fleece I have for rugs, just trying to decide if it should be 2 ply as warp or singles as weft. Also starting spinning through a bunch of samplers of cellulose fiber 25g each and writing some notes about them. I spun mint, ingeo corn, banana and soybean top so far. They're similar but not all the same. Also spinning a pound of roving on my CPW, which I'm done with 8oz and onto the next braid.
  • Work on tablet weaving - worked on it! almost done
  • Get Romney on the loom - got it on! need to make a whole post about it, but also got it mostly woven and off
  • Knit sweater - almost done! I have a sleeve cuff left to knit. It's now a 3/4 sleeve very light sweater
  • Process alpaca fleece (I want to try and get this done quickly to start another fleece for an event but we'll see) - I ended up pulling the other fleece out just for the event, prepping and spinning about 4oz on my CPW at the event which was very fun. I'm debating whether to switch to carding the alpaca fleece instead since I'm not enjoying combing it. I want it to be 2 ply warp for a blanket so combing would be better. Maybe I can card it into sheets and spin from those
  • Crochet mittens - done!
  • Other (not specified at the time) - mended a pair of pants with [personal profile] dragonlady7 's guidance, wound new warp to go on the loom, garden got in the ground and I have a lot of happy dye plants
Life sure happened and I didn't write these posts. I was busy.

Spinning!

This is the Montadale (white) and mystery wool (purple) plyed up. I'll need to skein and wash. No plans for these but it's more rustic, so good for mittens and things.

Two bobbins side by side, full of yarn. The teal bobbin has solid purple yarn and the purple bobbin has barberpole white and purple yarn.
