I had this trip planned since December and nice weather wasn't going to stop me from going away.

I left around 7am Tuesday morning, driving out to the closet NJ train station, which is around an hour and 40 minutes, so not too bad of a drive at all. The train left a bit after 9 am and got to the city in around 2 1/2 hours, down to Penn Station with only one transfer. It was bitter cold that morning and I packed as light as I could manage, so I got quite cold on the train platform but the train itself was plenty warm. I brought my sweater to knit and also brought my work bluetooth ear protection, so used that on the train to listen to a book while I knitted. I managed with a duffel bag and a large backpack, which was more than I wanted to bring, but four days of clothes meant I needed more room so I had to haul a duffel bag. It was a small one at least and it was easy to tuck at my feet or hold close to me on stairs or in tight spaces, so it worked.

Originally I was supposed to meet my sister at her place in Brooklyn, but for mysterious reasons, she was 10 minutes from Penn Station when I got there and I saw her text before I got on the subway, so we got to hang out more!

We dropped my stuff at her apartment and went to the corner grocery store where we got snacks and lunch. Then we hung out for a bit and took a nap.  Then we headed back to Manhatten and grabbed dinner at a place called the Grey Dog. Food was decent, they had gluten free bread for all their sandwiches. Fries were mid. We stopped by Z's workplace and chatted with her coworkers while killing time and drinking hot chocolate and then headed for the venue.

We were seeing Big Richard at the Bitter End and the band was fantastic as always. The venue and crowd were odd. The venue was a long narrow room with the stage at the center facing small tables and standing room to either side with a few tables. All of the tables directly facing the stage were reserved and it must have been for friends and family because there wasn't any VIP options when I bought the tickets. But also, not everyone showed up so some of those tables were empty. It was a tiny crowd for the space, which wasn't very big. The music as per usual was too loud but my sister introduced me to Mack's Earplugs and hoo boy, they are amazing! I hate traditional ear plugs and haven't tried the expensive loops or anything. Only downside is my ears got sweaty on the inside by the end of the concert but so worth it.

The music and band were amazing as always though and what a freaking delight. They're incredible at playing live and have really good chemistry and banter. They had another gig in CT the next night and my sister and I did actual research to see if it would make sense for us to go, but it wouldn't unfortunately.

Then we headed back to Z's. Got home at 11:30ish and had to do the come down thing, so it was after midnight that I finally fell asleep.

We slept in the next morning. Well. Z slept in until around 10. I slept in until 7, got up, showered, ate breakfast, knitted and then took a nap for an hour until she got up. Worked great honestly. Ate food before we left.

The we went to the Brooklyn Central Library, where we got a personalized tour from a friend of Z's who works there including some exciting maintenance areas which showed how many different addons there were to the building over time, even if the outside looks like one solid building. And we got to see all the creepy stacks in the basement. Love that. She gave me a brooklyn library card which was very nice.

We got ice cream at Ample Hills Creamery, which was delicious and then went to the Brooklyn Art Museum. We went up to the small exhibit Sakimatwemtwe: A Century of Reflection on the Arts of Africa which was a collection of items that had previously been on exhibit in the 1920s by ye olde colonizers and gave actual context on what the artifacts were and their significance in specific Congolese cultures since most of the artifacts came from Belgian controlled Congo at the time. It was right next to the Egyptian wing, so we wandered through there admiring the craftsmanship of the items. Then we sat down on the bench in the middle of the exhibit and had a lovely conversation about making art and craft and convenience culture and disposablility and all sorts of cool things since the place was pretty much empty. It was nearly closing time, so we left and walked back, admiring some cool architecture we saw. We got takeout from a local mexican grocery for dinner and then did our favorite thing, which is doing music exchange by playing youtube videos on the tv of cool music we've heard recently.

Thursday morning, I had a lay around for a bit, the packed, said goodbye to my sister and headed to the Tenement Museum to meet up with Jade. Hilariously, she accidentally took an express train and ended up in Brooklyn, so I found a little park with seating and hung out there until she managed to get back. Thankfully, our tour was at 10:45, so we had enough time for her to make it back. The museum had storage, so I was able to store my backpack and duffel bag there which was fantastic. We first did the Moores tour, about Irish immigrants and had such a good time that we asked the tour guide if she had a favorite tour and she recommended the Levines, which was about Jewish immigrant women. All the tours center around people who actually lived in the house and they had both recreated living spaces and the ruined spaces as it was in the 1980s when the founders opened the place up. The building sat mostly empty from the 1930s to the 1980s. We went and got lunch in the middle of that from a deli, which had delicious chicken and rice for me and empanadas for Jade.

After the tours, we walked up to Bub's Bakery, in a different neighborhood for breakfast and snacks for me for travel day friday. The food was amazing! I got two bagels, a biscuit, a cinnamon roll and a kouign amann which is a fancy folded donut with jam and lemon pastry cream. It was all very expensive but really really good. I wish they had recipes because these were so good. The kouign amann was the first donut like thing I've had since I had to go gluten free and it was phenomenal. The bagels were extremely bagel. The cinnamon roll is decent, but I think I've got better recipes. I ate the kouign amann on the bench outside, Jade got a banana pudding cup and everything else was for later.

We took the bus back to her place and then went wandering around jersey city, got ice cream, went to the park, enjoyed the wonderful warm weather and checked out her local library. And sat and chatted and admired the NYC skyline. We got dinner at a crepe place that did savory crepes which were fucking incredible and so so so tasty.

A picture of Manhatten from a hill in Jersey City , the sky is dramatic and multicolored at sunset.

Friday morning, Jade went to work and I took the bus down to the Hoboken Terminal and caught my train from there, which worked extremely well since it is a train hub for the trains leaving the city. The conductor was so nice and moved the seats for the people traveling to the end of the line so we got more knee room. I was back to my truck by 10:30 and home by 12:30 where I took a two hour nap.

The whole trip was a freaking delight, I'm so glad I went before the season got busy. The weather was great and I got to spent time with Jade and Z and it was so lovely.

monday, I drove 2.5 hours each way down to a meeting for nutrient management credits. The one state has decided that consultants don't get to do online programs for credits anymore, so I need to go to in person meetings now. Its not the worst now that I live closer. I made it down and back in plenty of time, the meeting was fine, I got a decent amount of knitting done and chatted with some folks from my old company that I haven't seen in years.

Tuesday I cut and split more wood, my dad brought down more trees. I filled a wood bin full and got it under cover.

Wednesday, I drove to Ohio. This trip was originally to purchase and pickup a used donut machine for the farm. Late last week, the ebay guy bailed on me, we had been negotiating prices in messages and abruptly, the listing was gone and he stopped responding. Not sure what that was about because he said he had two of them, but whatever. Since the donut machine was in Ohio, in the city where Tyronicbob (A- from crafting night) lived, I arranged to stay with her a while ago. When the ebay guy bailed, I let her know but figured it's February, I didn't really have anything urgent going on, I could totally drive to Ohio.

I never did anything irresponsible or impulsive in my 20s, when I feel most people do their silly impulse trips, so why not now?

It was a 7 hour drive which on the way down, I hadn't slept super well that night and the drive dragged, I was Too Aware. I stopped several times and took at nap at one rest stop just to make sure I could keep going. Snacks and podcasts got me to A's house by 4:30 or so. I have learned that Ohio culture is putting the name of the town on the overpass bridge in case you don't know where you are and all the other signs aren't helpful enough. The city A- is in had some traffic but overall, the drive was quiet. I didn't have any long haul driving buddies which always makes me a little sad.

When I arrived, I was pretty tired, but we settled in and chatted and watched some olympics events as background noise and then we ate tacos that she had made ahead of time and put in the fridge. We relaxed, watched some stuff and chatted more, then we got talking about the podcast Kill James Bond and Abigail Thorne's writing/directing/performance of The Prince and A- put it on the tv. It was phenomenal! What a cool play, cast and performance. The recording is on Nebula, not sure if a subscription is required, but wow, super worth it if you do have to pay. The plot is that people get stuck in Shakespeare performances as the characters and are trying to escape. It's so full of feelings and it's so good as a recorded live performance. After that, sleep time for me.

A- did some funky stuff to adjust her sleep schedule enough to be awake and aware during the daytime and we watched some hockey before heading over to the conservatory. It was absolutely so cool! There was beautiful glasswork interspersed with the plants and they had an orchid greenhouse on display with all sorts of winding paths and absolutely bursting with plants. They also had a desert greenhouse and a butterfly greenhouse although the butterflies were only just hatching and being released. Extremely cool and the colors of plants and different shapes and layouts, the rocks, the paths, the glassworks. Super cool and really awesome work.

Then we went and ate lunch at a nearby market, which had a bunch of small food stalls inside a big warehouse building. We got somali food, which was stuff on rice, absolutely delicious and warm and filling. Then we got ice cream, which was from a local place, smooth and creamy and delicious. A- drove the long way everywhere we went to give me a tour of the city and all the neat things, then we headed to a historic neighborhood to an incredible bookstore.

This bookstore is in two back to back connected uhh, closest thing I can describe them as is triplexes, but really they took these buildings and opened up some doors between them and created just a labyrinth bookstore. The website says it has 32 rooms, but they're all small and narrow and weirdly laid out and there's nooks of shelves everywhere. It's so cool. It took us over an hour to find our way up to the third floor where the scifi and fantasy section was. All the books they carry are new but they had a ton of more obscure books. Really cool. I bought a bunch of books, some nonfiction, some fiction.

A- was starting to get tired, so we headed back to the house and I settled in to watch some snowboarding and she took a nap. We ate lunch leftovers for dinner and then watched more olympics. We created a delightful game as we watched the pairs ice dance free skate replay. So pairs figure skating is mostly about having dramatic feelings (love or tragic) and most of the music is pretty boring. So instead of listening to the music, we created better romance stories for the pairs based on an element of the performance and hashed it out to a movie plot. It was so much fun. For instance, the USA team had the flamenco/matador inspired performance, so we decided that the plot was actually about the movie that was being made about matadors, the woman was the talent scout for the local area, the man was the local bull wrangler who loved his bulls very much. The movie was a disaster due to the director's conflict with the lead actor and the talent scout pulled the bull wrangler into being her local guide and help until she got frustrated with the director and just shoved the bull wrangler into being the lead in the movie. He does it under protest and that's his only acting role ever. The talent scout decides to stay in spain to stay with the bull wrangler because he just wants to go back to taking care of his sweet little babies (the bulls) and she's a bitch with a clipboard (h/t to Sonnet from craft nights for this phrase/person type) and can wrangle people in spain who need wrangling and they live happily ever after.

The only ones we didn't make up stories for were the Cleopatra performance (look ma, no hands was the absolute best lift ever), the matrix performance, the Dune one and the scottish performance (so oddly done that we didn't think they really thought it through. they could have changed the music and the costumes to be so much better, We Had Opinions). We came up with first mate/captain on the high seas Moby Dick style, jewel heist, spy romance, research historian/archivist, godzilla attacking the city and only the jet fighter/nuclear scientists could stop it but it's a tragedy so godzilla won in the end, an alien invasion blows up paris and they have to flee and he's secretly a parasitic alien and they blow up the other aliens and fall in love, and some others that I can't remember right now, but what an absolute delight to banter back and forth and build a little story out of pretty meh music. The performances were all great but honestly, dramatic/tragic feelings is very boring at this point. I wish I could find photos of everyone competing since that would help me remember all the stories, but I can't find a good feed for just photos and the replays have been removed, so oh well.

I went to bed after that because it was responsible of me to do.

This morning I got up around 6, ate breakfast and was on the road by 7am. A- did some split sleep to see me off and so she'd be good for work tonight and I drove home. I did have a tractor trailer driving buddy for a couple hours on the highway which was nice. I got into a good driving zone today, let the podcasts roll and the time passed quickly and I wasn't too aware of it which was nice.

I got in, went and laid in bed for an hour, went to take a shower and my dad accidentally let the outdoor burner go mostly out so the water was cold, so I went and got that started back up and took a shower at my parents house instead.

It was an absolute delight to hang out with A-, she is so sweet and fun and great to hang out with in person, not just on the internet. Her cat was a chatty little goof too. It was so nice and I'm so glad I went even though it was a long drive and a short trip. So much fun! That's 3/3 internet friends being absolute delights in person, so I'm on a roll.

Thursday morning, I got up on time, packed the last few items into my bags, loaded the truck and hit the road. I had plenty of time to make the trip, which was good because my stomach was upset. It was somewhat upset the entire trip which was a bit of a downer but not so much that it really affected my plans. I arrived the weaver's guild show and sale venue first, five minutes before anyone else did. We unloaded a few things from people's cars there and then headed over to the storage unit. There was a lot of stuff in that storage unit, which we parceled out between four vehicles (including my truck) and a small trailer. Then we headed back to the venue to unload.

That's when things got very busy! I was on two jobs: lifting heavy things and lighting. Given I was the only person there under the age of hmm, probably 60, this was extremely important to be able to lift heavy things. All of the things had to be unloaded from vehicles and tables brought up from the basement. Heavy tables, not the nice light plastic ones. Not quite as heavy as those metal ones from the 70s, you know the ones. Once I had brought up all the tables needed to each floor and dropped them off to the appropriate folks setting up each area, I started on lights. The venue is a wedding venue and has absolutely terrible lighting. It's an old barn that has been renovated to the point where all the nice old beams are visible (and will give you so many splinters) but also there's normal electrical and HVAC and things like that. But very dim or yellow lighting. Bad for product, probably nice for photos.

I hopped on the ladder and put up so many lights. 20 or so clamp on lights and a bunch of track lighting in various places. This involved doing electrical cord things that I would never recommend and can't wait for the year we set the place on fire with questionable hookups. But the lights don't pull much power so it's probably fine. Probably. Then I carried more things as the other guild members arrived to drop off product to various locations. The venue had small offshoots of the main room, each which got it's own product type in there. So main area had clothing, one small room had gifts and misc, another had scarves, upstairs the main area had towels, table runners, offshoot area had shawls and bags, another pillows, etc. I brought my stuff in and set up was more or less finished right around 5pm.

I stopped through the Venezuelan food place and got arepas, tostadas and an incredible beef, bean and maduros empanada. So good. I stayed in [personal profile] dragonlady7 's cabin for this trip since she wasn't in, so I arrived to the farm after normal dinner time but checked in with A and family and hung out and chatted for a bit. Then Z came out to the cabin to light the propane stove for me and I settled in for the night.

The next morning, I got up and went back to the sale, the show opens at 11:30, so the members have more drop off time and we can all be ready to go. I helped with last minute light adjustments, carrying more bins and boxes in and helped some folks carry some demo looms in. Then I left. It's a madhouse Friday and I'm not that into retail stuff at this point. I went to the co-op and got food for the weekend, snacks and breakfast food plus stocked up on some baking supplies that I would need to order or find special. I played a bunch of pokemon go around town and then spent that evening sitting around reading a book and knitting. And figuring out that I had fucked up my saturday plans. Originally I was planning to go to an SCA event, but I realized that it was pre-registration only and the registration had closed on the 11th, so that was out. I was kinda disappointed, I didn't read the event page very well when I first realized it was happening and then should have checked it again, but forgot. Oh well.

Saturday, I slept in a bit, then took myself to the library. I sat around, read a book and knitted and then went over to the yarn store that I've been to before. There I had an utterly bizarre experience attempting to buy things. I picked up 52 weeks of Accessories, a knitting book which the person at the register and then the owner had no idea how much it would cost and as far as I can tell, just made a number up. I also bought some tencel weaving yarns in the hopes that I can weave a couple of scarves for next year's show and sale. It was just deeply odd. That shop has always been a bit weird when I go in there and buy things, so I can't say I'm surprised but it was amazing how difficult it was to give them money.

Headed back to the cabin again and munched snacks for dinner instead of real food. I knocked my food schedule completely out of whack. There was a storm that night, extremely windy and rainy, so I didn't sleep that well at first, but slept in instead. I killed time for a bit, then went to A Big Gay Market popup which was set up in a very tiny venue. I bought some things for christmas gifts and chatted with a few folks which was nice. Then I went to the Show and Sale. I wasn't technically on the schedule but added myself to do spinning demos since no one was doing them that day for some reason. I think the person signed up that day had backed out, so I did that for a while on my spindles. Chatted with a few people about spinning and weaving which was nice. Then the sale ended at 4 pm. We took everything down very quickly and loaded it all into vehicles and over to the storage unit as a group. We packed it all in by 6:45pm which was fantastic and I went and got myself chipotle since it was close by. The temperature had dropped rapidly and I drove back on some back roads through a snow squall that I was deeply afraid I was going to be off the road since I was crawling along at 15mph and still couldn't see the road well. It was extremely windy. Thankfully it was only 10 minutes or so of it and I got back to the farm fine. A and family had some folks in visiting and I stopped by the house to use indoor plumbing and refill my water and hung out and chatted with them for a while.

This morning I was up, packed and on the road by 9am or so. It wasn't fun driving in the wind, but it wasn't terrible overall.

B's cabin was extremely nice to stay in, I slept on the pull out couch with blankets and my nice sleeping bag and pillows. The propane stove was really wonderful to sit in front of in the evenings and mornings, I would prop my feet up to warm them up before going about my day or getting into bed. It was quiet and peaceful and I really only interacted with people if I wanted to. It was so nice to have a quiet home base for my wanderings.

It was a delight to see all of the weaver's guild folks! I missed chatting with them and talking yarns and weaving and life and it was so nice to see them all. They kept thanking me and asking how I had been and how the farm was. It was so nice. It's so much fun to accomplish a big task with a bunch of other people.

The guild has gotten extremely professional about this sale, it is one of the biggest sales outlets for the guild members and brings in a ton of money. This includes spreadsheets that get sent out to all of us which I love to look at! We send in inventories beforehand, get barcodes for items, have standards for labeling and quality. So looking at the overall data, there was 3700 items in the sale and 2200 of them sold. Guild total sales was over $100,000, record breaking! It's incredibly wild how good the sale goes. The marketing is great, the location is great and the barcodes and systems they've got set up is extremely good. At any day, there are 25-30 people working the sale, it's a big thing!

I only had 25 items in the sale, primarily key fobs and handspun yarn, around half of my stuff sold so not too bad. Those aren't super popular things like towels, so pretty reasonable that they don't sell super fast. As far as I can tell, guild members are the ones buying my yarn haha, they all seem to like it a lot. I can always put the things that didn't sell into the sale again next year, so not a huge deal!

I can't wait to do it again next year! And maybe this winter I'll actually get some more things made.

I had a lovely weekend.

saturday morning, we got the plastic on the tunnel. I had been working on this on and off over the past two weeks. It was half of a high tunnel that we had tried to use to help along the blackberries but it didn't really succeed. We took half of it away (apparently I never posted about this and it is a very funny thing we tried and failed at but it was fun) and left the other half where it was without plastic. The blackberries are not a success. It's a combination of things: wrong varieties, wrong location, lack of attention, disease issues. So I mowed them all down this year and the tunnel is now more storage, especially for wagons because we can pull them through. It was hot and sticky that morning, but we got the plastic on and almost all secured by 10am after starting at 8 and I ran off. Tossed all my stuff in the truck and hit the road.

I took the trip slowly, because I have been driving on my spare (it's a proper tire, just old) and the check engine light had been on for low oil (I added more oil and it turned off). I made my way up to C's place, where I picked up 15 lbs of garlic and left money and cornmeal shortbread cookies. They were away on a camping trip, so I missed seeing them but it was lovely to see the area again and look at some of their farm projects. I got ice cream. Then headed to B's, stopping to pick up arepas on the way. I arrived around 6pm, we nommed food and sat around and chatted, then set up my tent and popped all my stuff in it. Then sleep time. Well. Reading a book, then sleeping

I didn't sleep particularly well, there was some amount of critters poking around and at the tent and a door on B's cabin slammed at 12:30am for some reason, but it was fine. I slept in a bit and wandered out around 8am. We ate breakfast and then wandered back out to the cabin. Did some crafting, chatting which was lovely and relaxing. I read a book for a bit. B worked on painting some outlet covers. When we went in for lunch, A asked if we could run for canned beans, which were needed for refried beans for dinner, so B and I went to the grocery store first, picked up beans, snacks and split an extremely good lunch of guacamole, chips and spicy california rolls (I had been complaining about the lack of guacamole available in the grocery stores by me). Then we stopped by an ice cream place. This was about the time some clouds rolled in, taking the temps from 90F with so much humidity to not blazing hot and just merely uncomfortable.

More crafting, reading and relaxing in the afternoon. knitting for me, painting for B. Just the nicest to be able to do that with a friend. B is a delight and it was so great to see her in person for the first time in six months and just get to hang out either chatting or crafting. I love some chill time with friends. I think it's interesting how the way I spend time with her is very like how I spent time with former roommate J who I still miss living with three years after we parted ways. Lots of quiet relaxing time together, watching things, chatting, occasional outings places. Hmm. I took a 20 min nap, which helped a lot with the sleep deprivation but since I napped in my tent without a fan, I woke up damp with sweat which was gross. But some time hanging out in the cabin in front of the fan fixed that and a fresh tshirt before dinner also helped.

Dinner made by A was absolutely delicious tacos with fixings and the wind picked up around 5:30 and dropped the outside temperature 20 degrees in about an hour. It felt cold, but super nice so we sat outside to eat. Z had friends visiting, so there was chatting with total strangers but it was good fun anyway. they all went for ice cream while B and I headed back to the cabin. she worked on her novel and looked at art and I read a book until sleep time. I slept fantastic that night, it got down to 50F and was so cold and nice. I had a sleeping bag and blanket and woke up much refreshed. We ate breakfast, then I packed up while B started work. She loaded me up with eggs and I refreshed my delicious meats supply.

Then I headed to my old house with a brief pit stop to fill my tire (the spare on). I had left some wood, some misc supplies and a bunch of pieces of fencing there and never managed to make the trip. That morning, I remembered why I had originally planned to bring the big farm truck: most of the wood was 12 feet long and would only hang 2ft off the bed of the big truck. but my truck, it would hang 4.5ft off the back. So I scrapped taking the wood. I offered it to B or if F wanted to offer it to any of her relatives, they could have it. Otherwise, when I come up in November, I'll bring a circular saw and chop the wood to fit in my truck bed and take it with me. It is on the wood rack I build, so I'm not too worried about it being in the way. As far as I can tell, F has not touched a single thing in the shed since I left. I got all the wire fencing rolled up, figuring out an efficent way to do it, then chatted with F about the goings-on. So pleased with myself, I strapped down my load and left, only realizing I left my multitool in the driveway 20 mins into my trip. I turned around and went back for it. I should probably get a second one in case something like this happens again.

But that turnaround cost me the time I had allotted to stopping by the co-op to pick up baking supplies I'd been having trouble sourcing, so I just hit the road. I stopped for gas, snacks and a quick load check and then drove home. I arrived in good time, right around 4:30pm which left me enough time to put away a few things, lay down and read a book before crafting.

I feel so good today that between the fantastic weather (only 77F today!!!) and my time away, I accidently worked from 7am to 8pm and am not particularly tired. I won't continue that, but man, getting away was great and to spend time with a friend was also great. Goals for next year: I get away from the farm once in June or July and once in August

that was a whirlwind week visiting Oregon.

I was up at 2am on tuesday, hitting the road by 3am to get to the airport. It wasn't far thankfully and I left all my winter gear in my truck and headed in. Since I was early for my flight, I got through security fast. I was wearing a mask and I opted out of the face scanning bullshit. The security people were fine with it, they just had me pull down my mask for the brief moment they needed to double check I was the person on my id card. I also had to tell them I wanted to opt out as soon as I handed them my card, so if you want to do it, do it immediately.

Security was fast although I had to take my hoodie off to run it through the scanner which was odd, but it meant I just went through the machine and didn't get patted down. All my stuff went through fine as well. I plopped myself down near the gate and knitted! C (my boss) and JP (her partner in life and farming) were also on the same flight and I got nervous when the plane started boarding and they weren't there. C texted my a few minutes later saying the person in front of JP had gotten hung up in security and he was stuck, so I got on the plane and they got on just as the plane was getting ready to leave, the last on.
lots of rambling and one picture )
I'm taking today off work and I'm really tired. We were tired all week but mostly due to all the stuff we were doing rather than time zone adjustment. We'll see how much sleep I get in the next week or so, but I should be able to adjust. It was a nice break from reality and now that I'm home, things are going to move quickly.

I am back from my trip and it was a delight for almost all of it!

Thursday, I spent the day packing and doing a tiny bit of work stuff. I spent a long time debating on whether to bring my knitting or not, right up until I got to the parking lot of the train station and then pulled it out and left it in my truck.

I got on the train to NYC which was relatively quiet and I didn't have a seat mate the whole way, but it was more of an express train than the ones I usually catch. My luggage total was my backpack, a lunch bag of snacks/sandwich and my small rolling suitcase. I wish I could have carried less things but I used basically everything I brought so it was worth bringing everything.

I spindle spun and read a book on the way to NYC, didn't touch my computer at all. Jade met me at the train station and we took the bus to her place in Jersey City. She's such a fast walker that I just end up incredibly sweaty all the time, but that's how I end up every time I'm in NYC, so like, so be it. That's why I brought so many changes of clothes. We got Indian food that night and crashed.

Morning train to Raleigh left at 7:30am so we were on the bus by 6am just in case. We stopped to grab food in Manhatten at a place that's open 24/7. It didn't have a ton of choices for me and I didn't know if the granola had wheat in it or not, so I basically ate a fruit salad for breakfast except it was weird, so like, 2/10 didn't really enjoy. Train loaded up no problem, we were able to sit together since the train conductors set aside row seats for people traveling together which was nice. The train was sold out at various points, so we really did need the set aside seats.

this is very long and rambly )

I really had a fun time with all the travel and the trains were a lot of fun to take, way better than driving and flying and cheaper than flying. One way tickets from NYC to Raleigh were $75. Now I want to take trains all over the place.

I really was glad to spend time with Jade again too, I missed her a lot. I miss living with her a lot too, it really was good. But her goals are way different than mine, so it made sense to split up. It was almost like no time had passed at all when it's been over two years since we last met up. Although we do watch baking shows together some weekends online. It was so good to see Z and catch her up on the parents nonsense and how that's all going. I ate so much delicious food. 10/10 would trip again

I have finished the entire waistcoat and I will make a separate post about it because it's a lot of work and it looks so good and I want to highlight it well, especially once I take nice photos of it. I tried on the whole outfit and realized I needed a tie to make it formal enough without the suit coat, so I made a tie. Turns out, you can make any clothes you want and it's awesome. I still need to hem my pants and maybe my long sleeve shirt if I have time because the sleeves are too long

Late last week, Out in the Open, a rural VT queer org had a last minute call for volunteers to help deconstruct the floor of a timberframe building they had so they could put a new one on. It was a bit of a drive for me, but I went and had a lovely time. It was a bunch of crawling around on beams eight to ten feet in the air, so not bad and unscrewing boards and handing them off to the folks on the ground. I've been putting off going to queer support groups, but give me some construction and manual labor and I'm there. I don't think this is what my therapist had in mind when she encouraged me to get more involved with the local queer community but hey. I'm not that into talking.

Work has not been busy so I'm trying to get some things done, although they're mostly fun things. I'm washing a fleece today, I just bought supplies to put up a laundry line in the backyard and more mouse traps. Plus supplies to refresh the great wheel.

I'm still watching the olympics although a little slower than I had been. The climbing final and equestrian team jumping were both excellent and I'm watching individual jumping now.

Next week I'm going to a friend's wedding in Raleigh, NC, travelling with former roommate J. We decided to take the train down, because flights are expensive and annoying and driving 10 hours is also terrible. So we will depart NYC for Raleigh and take a 10 hour train. We'll have a day in Raleigh for fun and the wedding and then the train back. I'm spending two extra nights in NYC because the trains to and from home don't work to catch the long train timing wise. In an ideal world, we'd spend more time down there, but it's summer and work and farm stuff is going to pick up in the next few weeks, and J is traveling to Germany for a different friend's wedding a day and a half after we get back.

So I have about 25 hours of travel to entertain myself. I'm sure we'll have access to an outlet since we usually do. I'm planning to bring one small suitcase and one backpack. I decided not to bring my computer since it's a short trip and that's one more big thing to bring. Here's my vague entertainment plan:
  • cotton spindle and lots of cotton
  • 3 physical books
  • 3-4 books on my phone
  • install peacock app on phone so I can watch more olympics replays (it's almost the paralympics!)
  • podcasts - I pretty consistently have a 30 hour backlog, so I could make a dent in it
  • notebook and pens - I usually bring these on camping trips for thinking thoughts
  • knitting? - I'm torn on this one because my sweater is just the sleeves left so it's bulky but I could probably really get some knitting done on the train with it.
  • snacks, so many snacks. Currently planning to bake sables, hazelnut cookies, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, corn cheese jalapeno muffins and eat lots on the trip. It doesn't look like there's meals included with the train. Maybe one more savory thing....probably should do sandwiches or something.
Any other entertainment ideas you might have? Or advice on longer train rides? Any recs for downtown Raleigh?

masking on the train will be annoying but the private rooms were very expensive so I'm just going to deal with it.

We won't have too far to go to the hotel when we arrive, the most annoying part will be lugging my stuff around NYC to J's place and maybe meeting with my sister if she doesn't have work.

Saturday morning, I got up nice and early and headed to the train station. NYC bound! I went to see this exhibit on Andean weaving and to see my sister. I got to NYC around 10, thoroughly enjoying my train ride. I spindle spun cotton the whole way and it was just lovely. I was also on the river side and got to enjoy the view.

I got to the city and did a little walk down to a bakery that I've gotten delicious south american breads from (gluten free!) and nommed them while I waited for my sister. My train was early and she was running a little late, but I had bread so I was happy.

After she got there, we took the subway up to the Met. The security people were unimpressed by me bringing my travel bag with me, but they looked through it and begrudgingly let me through. They didn't like my spindle and almost took it away but thankfully they didn't. Coat check took our bags and we went looking for the exhibit. It was buried in the back of the contemporary art rooms, actually relatively difficult to find.

The Andean textiles were INCREDIBLE. They were so beautifully made, the yarn was so beautifully spun and fine, the weaving was so precise and so well done. It was amazing. Here's a photo of one, where the yarns and weaving combined for 300 picks per inch. I didn't take a picture of the plackard, but I think it was from 1200 or so.

This is the third? time I've been to NYC and it was fun! Exhausting but fun!

My sister's community choir had a concert on Sunday and I've watched the live streams but wanted to see it in person. Plus there was a museum exhibit (Shaped by the Loom, incredible exhibit that I highly recommend) so a couple weeks ago, I booked all the tickets.

Friday, I worked in the morning, got all the emails and things done, then packed and hopped on the train south. I took everything in one hiking backpack that I got when I was traveling in Europe that one semester in college. At the last minute, I pulled some extra shirts and an extra book out, which was smart. I was also taking my old laptop down to my sister since hers is dying and all the old one needed was a power cord.

Got to the train station right on time, my train was 20 mins late. womp womp.

But it was fine! I was on the river side and it was a lovely trip. I spun on my tiny drop spindle and read my book. Read more... )

I was both surprised and not surprised at the lack of masks everywhere, but when out on non busy streets, Z and I took our masks off to enjoy the nice weather. Only issue was on Saturday in museums and on subways all day meant we were both dehydrated. Did about 20km of walking according to Pokemon Go, which was the only tracking I did. Might be a little high since it would have caught some subway travel but it felt like 20km.

It was a fun weekend! Not the kind of thing I'm going to do frequently because I'm exhausted today, but it was so good to go down and see everyone and all the things.

I've been wanting to go down to the MD Sheep and Wool festival. I was planning to do the trip in 2020 so I could see friends and get lots of sheepy things. Obviously that didn't happen.

It is back on in person this year and I keep thinking maybe....

But I don't think it's going to be a good idea this year.

It would be for four days, train travel down to BWI and then rent a car to drive out to the fairgrounds. Mara would need to stay with someone, I would need to rent a hotel room. It is at the beginning of May when everything is busy. I'm literally trying to buy a house and if we managed to find something soon and the whole thing went well, it could land closing right around that weekend.

Ugh. I want to go.

I went to NYC yesterday to visit my sibling for my first time ever* going to NYC. It was fun! Central Park was my favorite part. I avoided going to a big museum because I put my multitool in my pocket and was afraid they might take it.  *I went when I was 4 or so, don't remember it.

we sat in the park and ate pizza and chatted and then we went to big gay ice cream which was delicious and also big gay. we wandered around for a while, then I went to the museum at FIT to see their exhibit on the rose in fashion. very good, gave me weaving ideas

I really liked taking the train down and back, very easy, big comfy seats, nice staff. got some tasty baked goods wandering around too. I really only got to see a few small parts of manhatten so obviously my view is biased but I'm glad other people want to live in NYC

Me and Jade went to Montreal for the weekend (and friday)! It was great!

This was a trip we put together within the past month, which is very quick for us. I definitely am a plan waaaay ahead person, and she tends to follow my lead on planning way way ahead for things. The most important thing was booking the dogsitter and after that went through, it was easy to get everything else done. We played it by ear a lot more than we normally would and it worked out great.

Friday, we loaded the car and drove up. I was driving because Jade was not going to do that. We wanted to take the train but it is literally 8 hours on both ends of a trip and we couldn't take that much time off work. But driving also meant we could see things outside the city and our first stop, where we spent the afternoon was Fort Chambly, which was pretty rad.

A huge old fort sits under a bright blue sky.

 So.

I am not in PA.

I am back in my apartment in NY.

I left later than I meant to, work running long, which delayed my trip over to the A farm to drop seeds to B and then waffling about whether to go or not so I got on the road at like, 5pm.

Okay I say, that's fine.

It's snowing. That's also fine I say. No one else thought it was fine. There were three accidents on 87 (I only go five miles on it) another right after I got through the toll booth and one right as I got on 88. This is weird but okay I said. Kept moving, got about an hour into my trip and then we come to a complete stop. There were no exits for several miles back and it was three or four miles to the next exit.

We sat for about a half hour and I just decided that when we got through, I was going to turn back. My ETA was after 9pm I know I was getting tired and I was extremely glad I turned at the next exit because around 7:30 I got the first wave of tired and after I got back and started unloading, I got another big tired wave.

So I'm home for the weekend and I'll probably take a day off work next weekend and stay at my parents longer. I should have listened to my gut but all in all, I just wasted some gas and time, so it's okay.

I spent the weekend in Buffalo, visiting [personal profile] dragonlady7 and it was lovely!

I left Friday morning and drove to Ithaca.

Cut for length of rambling and pictures )

All in all, a super fun weekend that was really cool to see a lot of New York State and Buffalo and it was a really lovely time! It was great to spend time with friends!
