December crafting goals
  • finish the color spin I've got and get back to working on the alpaca. spin some other stuff - finished the color spin, spun another 14 oz of yarn and finished a bobbin of the alpaca, plyed some things too
  • finish knitting the hat - finished!
  • crochet a dice bag for my sister - crocheted two!
  • sew the purse for my mom - did it! she loves it!
  • work on coat mockup - got it all cut out, interfacing attached, just about started piecing it
  • weave rug - worked on it!
  • process fleece - worked on it!
  • Other - sewed a bag for my SIL, mostly wrote the waistcoat post, wove three tablet woven bands, two for the bags. Prototyped my Dad's gift of ratchet strap bags and made gift bags out of fabric for all the gifts
Color spin! It was 2 ounces each of six color of roving from Green Goat Ranch in their A Midwinter's Nights Dream colorways, which are grey overdyed to make the colors a bit muted which I loved. I don't know what I'm doing with it yet, I think some kind of weaving project, but I didn't spin it for weaving as a single, so I'd need to ply it if it was to be used as warp and I don't really have a ton of it, so I'd need to add some other yarn which I don't have. So it's taking up bobbin space right now and I need to figure something out.

Six colors of roving, one already spun on the wheel, the rest still in braids. The colors are deep red, light red, orange, green, blue, purple.
this is a ton of stuff and pictures )
Whew, that was a lot.

August goals
  • spin things! - I have spun things! I have still been making slow progress on cotton spindling. I spun up 8oz of something white and shiny from stash, needs to be plyed. I am 5/6 of the way through a six color spin on my electric wheel. it's too messy to spin in bed. I pushed my current wheeel project, over a pound of brown alpaca destined for a blanket to the side to get this spin done. also finished a red, green, grey spin that took me ages, no picture because I just didn't take one and it's across the room.
  • knit sweater - worked on it, I've got both sleeves picked up and am working both at once! and paused to knit a hat for a gift
  • weave sample and get the main project warped - samples woven, project adjusted, woven and most cut off the loom and washed. I did a time tracking on this project for fun and it took me 1 hour to wind and weave 8 bobbins of yarn, which made 27 inches of fabric on the loom. solid. so I really whipped through the weaving on this.
  • twist fringe on pink shawl for sale - gave up on this
  • finish the waistcoat - Finished! Will get a separate post soon
  • work on great wheel - lol no
  • woodwork a few things - pegs for great wheel, tall storage thing for weaving supplies - did make tall storage thing out of wood, works great
  • other stuff done: wove a tablet band, wove a little message band for a friend, have another on the loom, cut and sewed a bunch of tablet woven bands into keyfobs, participated in the weaver's guild show and sale, washed one fleece, sewed a very comfortable giant hoodie, repaired my slippers, mockup of a purse done for my mom's christmas gift, started cutting fabric for the real one, started a mockup for a fancy coat for myself
something white and shiny from stash. I don't remember what it is, I think pencil roving from a local farm. maybe romney/wensleydale? I can't remember and my notebook with the info is across the room. 8oz, still needs to be plyed

A wooden wheel bobbin full of shiny white singles yarn that has a halo.

July goals
  • Spin the CVM - done! Just finished it on the 30th, it took me about a month to spin 3oz. Started another spinning project that is 4oz of combed top to spin on my electric wheel around. Also just started 8oz of Romney roving on the CPW. Did some Tour de Fleece spinning, where my goal was to spin every day, which I did, mostly on my spindle spinning of cotton
  • Knit sweater - worked on it a tiny bit
  • twist fringe on shawl for guild sale - did the yellow one, working on the pink one, bought a fringe twister because it was getting tedious
  • finish weaving on the loom and start warping next project - finished! Got the sample for the next one almost on the loom
  • work on tablet weaving - cut the project off the loom, it really wasn't working, don't weave with upholstry thread, wove three other little bands
  • Sew the waistcoat - almost done! just buttons to go
  • wash a fleece? - nope
  • process fleece - worked on it
  • engage in shenanigans (already happening >:) I went out and collected some nettles and invasive phragmites from the swamp this morning) - no more shenanigans but I might do this again soon. And I acquired a great wheel :) :) :)
The fluffy clouds of 3oz of CVM that I combed, I bought it from Clemes & Clemes Good Clean Fiber. It's just got a little bit of variation of color, which is neat although it's really only noticable in the yarn. Spun extremely fine which was kinda fun even though it took all month. Don't have yardage yet, I'm going to put it on a cone for weaving to see what kind of fabric a singles finewool will make. 64 wpi.

A picture taken in a plastic bag holding fiber and the fiber is shadowy and fluffy balls of white and off white fiber.
so many pictures! )

March goals
  • spin mohair, finishing it would be a stretch - spun! Didn't finish it but I'm one bobbin away from finishing. Also spun 4 oz of top and chain plyed it. started another top spin but it's not done yet
  • finish mittens - finished them and then had to rip the second thumb back out since it was too tight, haven't finished it yet
  • knit sweater - made progress, almost done with the back, broke two circular needles :/
  • cone up alpaca - CONED, so much fun to use
  • process the rest of the brown alpaca fleece? - worked on it, close to done
  • sew pullover - sewn!
  • tablet weaving - make a loom for this? - found my weaving notebook, finished the languishing project, did one small weaving project for a friend, started a larger more complicated one
  • other - washed three fleeces, I'm trying to get them all washed so I have less raw fleeces sitting around forever.
I did a lot of crafting, lots of things in progress. Basically no reading done, so I'll combine March and April reading.

Pullover made, I love it. It's light, it's stretchy, it's comfy. I want to make more at some point. Pattern is Jackson Pullover by Helen's Closet. Terrible picture!

A terrible picture in bad lighting of a black pullover laying flat on a table.

October goals
  • Spin alpaca and wash, skein and label yarns - spun another bobbin of alpaca, making progress. didn't do the other stuff. Did spin 10oz of Icelandic fleece (that I sheared!) that was carded to combine the inner and outer coats. Need to decide if plying or leaving as singles.
  • knit sweater - worked on it
  • crochet mittens - worked on it a little bit
  • weave on the big loom! maybe get it all woven? - WOVEN and off the loom! not wet finished though
  • process indigo plants - did this, mixed success I think. I might not have fermented enough but I have a lead on a book that should tell me how this works
  • finish blog post - lol no
  • work on a fleece - I carded the 10oz Icelandic fleece and started combing the Cotswold/Dorset cross fleece that I have a lot of
  • warp a tablet woven band to try weaving words (Please Weave a Message is the book title) (the words will be swear words because why not) -started this! I wove to the letter h so far, need to flip cards and finish the alphabet. Figured out how to tell if needing to go forwards or backwards by sight rather than by drafting on the graphing.
  • Other things done but not planned for - cut and hand basted jacket muslin, decided to make a button down shirt from the mohair fleece I was given - the goal is to finish it by next Rhinebeck if possible so I could wear it
Pictures!

Weaving! It's a 2.5 yard warp, so not super long and it wove up pretty fast once I got rolling. The neat thing about this pattern was that if I had threaded it in 1-2-3-4, and treadled the pattern, it would have made herringbone. But because of the threading pattern 1-2-3-4-3-2-1-4-3-2-3-4, when I treadled it, it came out as diamonds and I love it so much, easy treadling to remember too. It still needs wet finishing.

A small pile of cloth is spread out on the table.

July Goals - despite my wrist preventing me from crafting for several weeks, I still got a lot done and I'm very happy it's back to normal. I'd say most of this is just finishing things that were mostly done so it's not as impressive as it looks but progress was made. I wish there was a fun spinning event like Tour de Fleece during the winter, but alas.
  • spinning - work on Pansy Pandemonium. I doubt I'll finish the 6oz in July but that's okay. maybe spin some more samplers on the eel wheel - all spun up! Nothing else spun but I started spinning something last night
  • knitting - finish the sweater and get B to take actual nice photos of me wearing it - sweater finished! Crappy photo below. New sweater started
  • finish the tablet weaving - done! I also did two more small bands and started one more that's almost done
  • warp and weave the wool singles cloth - ugh. warped, beamed and stuck at threading the heddles since I don't have enough heddles yet. I'm halfway through tying more
  • process fleece - now that I typed that all up above, I think I'm going to switch to carding the alpaca and comb a sheep fleece - carded almost all of the remaining super soft section of the fleece, just a little more to go.
  • dye something???? - lol no
  • wash a fleece - I washed a small fleece! An icelandic sheep that I sheared. I think it will be a carded and spun fleece since the undercoat is so short, I did a tiny sample.
Pansy Pandimonium! It is superwash Targhee commercial combed top, dyed by Llady Llama Fiber, a pound of it spun up. I will chain ply it to keep the color repeats intact and it will someday go on the loom for a squishy blanket or something.

Four bobbins of fiber on a wooden background. The fiber changes from blue to yellow.

more photos! )August Goals
  • spinning - I think I'm formulating a weaving idea to spin, but I'm not 100% sure I'll do that yet right now. So spin something, chain ply Pansy Pandemonium and skein/wash/label everything
  • knit the new sweater
  • crochet the second pair of mittens
  • finish the tablet weaving
  • finish tying heddles and thread the loom and reed and then weave jeez
  • finish the alpaca fleece
  • wash a fleece
  • write one post about fiber arts stuff -  I have at least three things I want to write up, the plaid, the romney singles weaving, using fishing swivels with a backstrap loom
unicornduke: (Default)
A rainbow striped band is laying horizontally all piled up on a grey background. The rainbow is wiggly.
My fiber arts stuff has slowed way down as work is busy and I’m busy. I think I knitted a hat recently and I’m 2/3 through my current spinning project which I’ve been working on for a while. Oh well.
But this! Oh what fun!
