I was at work and the power went out and it went out in the building next to us.

We all just hung around for maybe ten fifteen minutes. I had been printing and the wifi was off so nothing to do. The emergency lights made beeping noises that were in different pitches.

And then we got told to leave the building!

So I said, haha I'm going home because I've got a laptop. and I did a little bit of work but the printing was my big project for the day so I went ice skating instead.

It was a new rink for me and there was only ten people or so because it's a tuesday at noon and I got some of my practice in on skating backwards, right crossovers, backwards pumping, weight shifting and then I ended with skating backwards and lifting up one foot and gliding for as long as I could. I think I need to get that down before I go back to working on hockey transitions. I did start working on the skating with feet in two different directions so you spin in a circle and that went okay. I fell right when one of the figure skaters and her coach were right there and the coach asked if I was okay. I said, yep and I do that a lot, so that was kinda funny.

Why do rinks mostly have weekday around lunch time public skates? I don't understand. Although, that other rink I went to tells me why, no one goes to week night skates!

And then I got home and this story on the NWHL exploded as breaking news while I was skating so thanks woho, please let me do one (1) thing without stuff happening. I think we all just need a quick break to watch some great hockey at World's and we can figure out the rest later.

oh yeah, apparently I got a raise? my boss had been on a call with other folks and then he tossed me a stick note that said he got me a raise so that's exciting.

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) has made the decision to discontinue operations effective May 1, 2019. Unfortunately, while the on-ice hockey is exceptional, the business model has proven to be economically unsustainable.

Holy shit.

I haven't actually posted since friday during work, which is unusual for me right now

Friday night we drove into the city to get mexican food at a place we hadn't been to before. It was decent but not worth the drive on a friday night. Not really better than the stuff we get for delivery lmao.I got chili pork tamales which sounded like a great idea except instead of doing flat tamales, they did round ones, like a meatball. Unfortunately to get that shape, you have to make the masa really thick and it is a very unplesant texture when it's that thick. stodgy is a good word.

cut because this got very long and rambly

NCAA Fantasy Hockey Week 22:

The Eagle has Selanded: Top seed Cornell and eighth seed RPI played not just the most memorable series of the weekend, but one of the most memorable series of the season. On Friday, after Cornell had put more than twenty shots on net without scoring, RPI went 1-0 up on its second shot of the game. Fifteen Cornell shots later, and two RPI shots later, Cornell finally leveled it at 1-1, and nearly sixteen minutes into overtime Cornell took it 2-1. Lovisa Selander (RPI, $59, 59 SP, 8.3 WP, 1 pick) made 63 saves and RPI took seven shots in total. Saturday was even more epic as RPI massively stepped up their offense, registering ten total shots on goal, and with a goal early in the first period and an empty-netter in the dying minutes took the game 2-0. Blake Orosz (RPI, $24.40, 24.4 SP, 4 WP, 0 picks) scored all three goals across the two games, which counts as a hat trick if you’re RPI. Sadly for fans of Cinderella stories, Cornell came to play in the decider and took it 6-1 to progress to the semi-finals. Selander’s save percentage across the series was an amazing .954. Over to Title IX Hockey for some more great stats:

Title (MMX)IX Hockey@TitleIXHockey

The 8 seed in the ECAC tournament prior to today had never won a game, and had taken the 1 seed to OT just 5 times for a total of 6 OTs.  RPI is 4 of those times and 5 of those OTs.

Selander’s NCAA career is over, but college hockey fans will remember her for a long time. She had already broken Brianne McLaughlin’s official NCAA save record a few weeks back; in the game that RPI won, she beat Nicole Hensley’s 4,094, which isn’t the official record because in Hensley’s freshman year Lindenwood was still transitioning to D1. She ends with 4,153 saves, an average of over a thousand saves a season (for a comparison, the average saves made this season by goalies that play 80% or more of minutes is 822, so Selander was about 25% more tested than the average goalie) and now takes her talents to the Boston Pride, who honestly should consider starting both her and Katie Burt and only playing four skaters.

SB Nation's Women's College Hockey Division 1 Poll:

5. Cornell (16-3-6), 83 — Last poll: 5

• Last week: W 2-1 v Rennselaer (3/1), L 0-2 v Rennselaer (3/2), W 6-1 v Rennselaer (3/3)

• This week: v Princeton (3/9), ECAC Championship (3/10)

One might say the Big Red threw away their shot(s) as they took a staggering 174 shots over three games scoring a grand total of 8, six of which came in the third game. They are glad to never see Lovisa Selander again as they now play Princeton who we assume will not be allowed to build a brick wall at their goal mouth this weekend.

Lovisa Selander is the best goalie you haven't heard of

A native of Sollentuna, Sweden, she broke Brianne McLaughlin’s 3,809-save record for most career saves in Division 1 (and as of yesterday, with a 49-save shutout against Cornell, has beaten Nicole Hensley’s 4,094, which isn’t the official record because in Hensley’s freshman year Lindenwood was still transitioning to D1). With the quarter final decider today, she's bound to add to her current 4098 saves and extend her lead at the top of the record books.

[...]

If you want one stat that sums up her contribution to the team, think about this. RPI have scored 49 goals total this season, which is less than all but three D1 programs. Yet their win percentage is 0.484, good for halfway down the rankings. Their ratio of win percentage to goals scored per game is 36%; the second team in the country on that stat, Cornell, is on 24%. Every goal scored by RPI gives them a 50% better chance of winning the game than any goal scored by anyone else. That’s how good Selander is.

Both the NWHL and CWHL have their playoffs this weekend. I think the NCAA still has theirs going on but RPI was booted so I'm no longer interested for now. All game times are in Eastern time unless otherwise specified.

NWHL: All the games are streamed on twitter, go to the nwhl twitter page at puck drop time and they post it. They play single elimination games to move on. The Isobel Cup Final will be either March 16 or 17 at the top seeded team's home rink.

CTW @ MET - Thursday, 3/7/19 at 7pm at the Barnabas Health Hockey House, Newark, NJ. The Riveters beat Buffalo in a shootout on Sunday, which is quite the upset. It gave them the #4 spot and got them home ice advantage in the play-in game of #5 vs #4. Whoever wins this game will fly to Minnesota on Sunday.

BOS @ BUF - Saturday, 3/9/19 at 7:30pm at the Harbor Center, Buffalo, NY. Boston lost their game against the Whitecaps on Saturday, putting them in the third place spot. They will travel to Buffalo. Whoever wins this game will be in the Isobel Cup Final.

(Update!) Riveters @ MIN - Sunday, 3/10/19 at 1:30central/2:30eastern at TRIA Rink, Saint Paul, MN. Whoever wins the CTWvMET game will play this game against the #1 Whitecaps, who won the regular season. Whoever wins this game will be in the Isobel Cup Final

Here is a very helpful bracket from the website:

CWHL: They play best of three to get to the Clarkson Cup Final, which is a single elimination game. It will be Sunday, March 24th at 12PM EST in Toronto, ON. This game will be streamed.

MAR @ MTL - Friday, March 8 at 7:30PM at Place Bell in Montreal (stream here), QC, Saturday, March 9 at 6:00PM at Complexe sportif Bell in Montreal, QC (Stream here), Sunday, March 10 at 1:30 at Complexe sportif Bell in Montreal, QC (stream here). This is the #3 v #2 game. The winner of this series will advance to the Clarkson Cup Final.

TOR @ CGY - All games played at Winsport Arena A in Calgary, AB. Friday, March 8 at 8:00PM Central/10:00PM Eastern (stream here), March 9 at 6:45PM Central/8:45PM Eastern (stream here), March 10 at 12:00PM Central/2PM Eastern (stream here). This is the #4 v #1 game. The winner of this series will advance to the Clarkson Cup Final.

Thanks to the Victory Press for the very helpful article on the CWHL playoffs here. They do great reporting on women's hockey.

I drove down late last night.

it's an unfortunate collision in timing with the start of ncaa women's hockey playoffs and the last weekend of nwhl regular season games.

but I spent the day in the woods, first picking up split wood and stacking it in a bin. We have been trying to shove more wood into bins by sticking 4 1x1s into the bin to hold more wood. I got my stack about a foot and a half over the top of the bin. this is all small stuff for boiling sap

then I ate a quick lunch and made the trek to the maple hill. my parents had 35-40 mph winds recently and dad was concerned that branches had fallen on the lines. the branches aren't the problem, the lines just stretch, the squirrels are. they chew through lines that lay on the ground, perhaps because they want the sap, perhaps because they're agents of chaos intent on increasing entropy in the universe.

thankfully, there was only three or four down, but I still had to wander all over the hill looking at the tap lines. Sap wasn't running today despite the high temperature because the mountain face is north facing and we had no sun. So it was still chilly. I was also supposed to check if there were leaks in the lines, but no sap running so I couldn't.

dad is actually out there boiling the first sap of the season right now. they got about 700 gallons of sap last week and they got everything ready to go. it's pretty cool. constant too. dad has to feed the fire every 8 minutes to get the heat they need. He's got a timer and everything.

after the hill, I went and split wood up on the hill at the home farm. it was decent.

the ncaa thing came up because RPI (8th in the ECAC and frankly not that good although I love them) is playing Cornell (1st in the ECAC and really really fucking good, they've lost 3 games this year, tied two and won 17). It's best of three. Here's the thing: RPI is holding their own. They played Cornell twice this year in regular season and lost both 5-0 and 8-2. terrible! but last night, RPI took them to overtime and Cornell finally won 2-1. I figured RPI would choke today because they can be so inconsistant.

I listened to the last period of today's game and I tuned in expecting cornell to have scored like five goals

RPI. shut. out. cornell.

SHUT OUT CORNELL TWO TO ZERO

I was SO STRESSED listening to the game while on the hill splitting firewood. Cornell put 49 shots on goal. RPI had 6 (SIX)

Lovisa Selander is just kicking ass and taking names. I couldn't believe it.

Literal shrieking from me as I worked.

so that's cool. they'll play tomorrow as the deciding game and I will totally be able to handle it

NOT

I'm currently watching the Buffalo at CTWhale game and the Whitecaps at Pride is at 7:30.

stress from them: Buffalo, Minnesota, and Boston are all tied for first place and these games plus tomorrow's two will determine who gets first place going into the playoffs. No big deal. That only gets them home ice advantage.

so I haven't caught up with things today and I will work on it, but also: hockey

I wouldn't say I've done a lot of long term fun goal setting and planning since I left college. I pretty much used my energy up figuring out how to spend that semester in Ireland.

The other goal planning has been much more adult and not fun focused like finding a house with a yard so I could adopt a dog, getting a new job. Adopting a dog is a long term plan fun thing but it isn't very specific.

I've been thinking and I want to go to the 2020 IIHF Women's World Hockey Tournament that's in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Like a week so I can watch ALL the games.

That's a specific and definitely achievable goal. It's in April next year in Halifax and Truro. It's a good time to go because work and farm stuff isn't too too busy, but it isn't the middle of winter to risk terrible storms, although there would be a little risk because Canada. Although maybe they have a bit of an ocean warm?

I'm set to pay off my truck loan later this year, so that will definitely help with saving up and provided the potential move in August happens with relatively low expenses, I'd be saved up by April.

So I think this is a thing I'm going to work towards and I hope I can make it happen!

Went to hockey game, had a wonderful time.

It was great. Local college team kicked butt and it was a really really awesome game.

I'm currently watching the third and fourth hockey games of the day and I'm tired and want to sleep but hockeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

(games were NWHL Buffalo at Riveters, CWHL Calgery at Montreal, currently watching NWHL CT Whale at Boston and CWHL Markham at Worcester (Worcester scored first for once! I'm so proud of them!!!))

I want to go to the Riveters game on Saturday SO MUCH

but with the drive, it's a whole dang day and ugh

But I waaaaaaaaant to

unicornduke: (Default)
But traffic is already backing up down near NYC and I'm not into that.

I was planning to go to the CT Whale vs BOS Pride game down in Stamford. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive with no traffic. That would mean I'd have only five hours of driving. But I just checked the traffic and it's backing up by ten minutes already. Especially because it added five minutes back up in the last half hour. So that would put me at around six hours of driving and I'm tired already. The ticket was only $20 and while I hate to waste it, it's only $20.

As much as I enjoy watching the Whale play, I suspect it will be a bit of a blowout and neither of the teams is my favorite. Now if I could get to the Buffalo-Whitecaps game, I would definitely drive six hours for that. Yesterday's game was so amazing to watch on tv!

So I'm staying home. And baking things probably. I've got a GF sourdough starter going that should be at the perfect point to use in just a few minutes. And I've got stuff for ice cream.
