Last week's post I just plum forgot that I helped [personal profile] dragonlady7 rebuild her outhouse on Friday. She has friends coming and needed an actual functioning outhouse instead of nothing. So I grabbed a bunch of tools and went over, and we got the rest of the outhouse done. Her BIL had gotten it up and stable since it had blown over, but it was essentially a roof and three half walls. We put more walls on, then built a fold-up door in the back for bucket removal. I'm bad at hinges but it's fine. Then I built an overengineered seat shelf because it offended me that the last seat shelf was a rectangle of 3/8 in plywood. Someday that would put the terror in someone and that is unacceptable. I built a rectangle the appropriate size, then added cross pieces where the seats would go for extra support, then put 3/4in planking over the top to make it pretty. Then we gave it six legs. We cut the first toilet seat hole out with a jigsaw (they are so much fun), and then B had to go get more supplies from the hardware store, we needed more bolts and things.

That was about that day, then Wednesday morning I went back over and we built two fold up shelves. There is a wood pile in the cabin to finish the ceiling with, and it's just in the way. But it can't go out because needs to be dry and the ceiling is on hold until her BIL has more time. So we just made two flat squares, attached hinges and legs and set them up. Worked great! And then when the wood is needed, the legs can be removed and the shelves folded up. Then since we had more time, I helped hang the screen door and put the second toilet seat on. Only broke one of the bolts by cranking too hard by hand with a small wrench. Cheap bolts. Then I went home, walked Mara and ate lunch, drove across three counties for an evening work field meeting that ran a half hour over and then drove home.

This weekend I'm at my parents and we attempted silly nonsense yesterday, moving half of a high tunnel. Didn't go well, but we did move it 250 feet before an uneven section of gravel caught the bottom edge of the running boards and bent the beams. Oh well. I'll be dissembling it today and the beams should still be relatively usable as storage outbuildings regardless of their slight bend. I'm heading home tomorrow.

Mara had one 2am leg cramp situation last week but this morning was extremely full of energy and we made the full loop here at the farm. Good days and bad days.

This is the way!

This is also the way!

You're getting an impressive amount done.

I goof off plenty in comparison.

Glad to hear it!

Being able to relax is important.

Farming does skew expectation. Though only my dad had the farming gene out of my immediate ancestors and my father and both my grandfathers worried that I was a bit of a slacker. (In different ways and with different language in each case.) No one else (other than me) ever has.

If I may be nosey - is the outhouse a function of location or a function of income, or something else?

Oooof. Yeah, that’s a challenging location to get anything done safely and ethically. A nice composting toilet might be the way to go instead, but I don’t know how well it would hold up to multiple farm hands using it multiple times a day.
