Saw a house yesterday that was on 2.5 acres.

The property itself was super nice, half open with some fencing from the horses, half partially wooded, there was a small barn that was pretty solid if needing the horse stalls ripped out because they were pretty hacked together.

The house was.....something. It was built in the 1880s apparently and while they had done some work to clean it up, if you got looking and really paid attention, it became really clear that that house had settled, not a single bit of it was level in any way and they had laid flooring over the subfloor, which was plain wood planking.

I went into the basement and the planking was very apparent and the basement structure was questionable given they put in some temporary bracing. Only some of the foundation had been replaced so it was a mix of cinderblock and stone. Like, I'm pretty sure the planking and the cross pieces were original to the house because they looked it and the original brace for the floor was a small tree trunk.

The kitchen was big and open with plenty of room and there were three bedrooms. There might not have been much or any insulation because there was a pellet stove and two space heaters in the upstairs bedrooms. Lots of room in the whole house.

typing this all out, I don't think I'm going to go for it but the property was fricken nice and I don't think I'll probably see another place like it

also they are out of their minds trying to get 130k for it. If I had wanted to go for it, I'd probably offer 90k or something like it just because of the massive structural issues, the insulation and the fact that the furnace would need to be replaced. It is pretty in the middle of nowhere too.

I maaaay have gone for it but someone nearby was target shooting with great frequency at 9am on a Thursday after several inches of snow and I didn't see a gun range on the map so that just means someone spends a lot of time target shooting and that would not be relaxing.

Sigh. And now that we're into the holiday season, very few places are coming up on the market. I'll keep looking but my realtor said that no one really wants to move at this point in the year. So I'm looking at the Jan 15th give notice date for our lease and I should probably deal with the disappointment that we'll probably need to renew for another 6 months here. The other problem is that I want to have a new place and be moved by April if at all possible because my entire life gets busy in May. Ugh. All around, ugh.

I just keep telling myself to be patient and I'm not very good at that once I've decided to do something.

Sympathy!

Avoiding proximity to someone with dubious backstops seems entirely sensible, alas. Also the whole "nothing square" is just every kind of learning experience. (Which you may well know from your parent's house.)

Square after a hundred years is very well built. Wood wants to move.

Proper backstops are large; how large varies with range and caliber and stuff, but a twelve foot high heap of dirt is a reasonable approximation for a home range like that. Shooting in the woods most likely doesn't have that.

So I'm finding it reassuring that you're not going for it.
