 I've got them!

In ice skating.

I went yesterday for a full two hours of public skating and again it was busier than I expected but not too bad. I had been practicing both the two foot transition and the stepping transitions and both were very rough, I was losing my balance a lot, etc. The two foot, I had been jumping up and turning since that's how I'd been taught. And I could do it but it wasn't great.

But towards the end, I just went, what if I just turn. And I did it. And now I can do transitions. No wonder I couldn't get it before. You can't teach this shit. All you do is turn. Granted, right now I'm using arm movements as a counter balance to get the momentum I need to do the turn but also: what the fuck.

you just. do the turn. there's no teaching this shit oh my god

Huzzah!

And, yup, there's no teaching it. (Though there is sometimes what one might call structured encouragement.)

Congratulations! :D :D

I was never much of an iceskater, but I was a roller (derby) skater, and while I could teach leftfoot transitions because I'd had to practice over and over to build myself the muscle memory, I never could teach anyone right footed transitions for exactly that reason. You just turn, I can't explain it, once you get it, it's so natural you can't figure out how you couldn't do it before. Bodies and brains are weird.
