Let me tell you, the fire trucks pulling in with the horns and the sirens was very confusing. All the neighbors were out and watching so a minor party I guess.
It's startlingly common, and quite often from "well, you shouldn't have thrown that out like that" rather than "idiot with matches" causes. (Lithium batteries that get crushed/the case cracked after something gets thrown on top of them do not help with this trend!)
it was weird, there was hardly a smoke plume and I couldn't actually see it around the wall of the apartment building while my neighbor could see the dumpster from a slightly different angle. I had to go downstairs and out the door to confirm the dumpster was in fact, on fire. Or smoking at that point. I didn't smell anything and didn't know it was on fire until the fire department pulled in. shrugs
