Mar. 19th, 2019 08:47 amWent ice skating last night and got some cleaning done!
I went to the quiet rink and there were only five of us for most of the time. A couple, me and a father-son pair who were allowed to get hockey sticks and a puck and do some hockey stuff. They were very polite about keeping the puck away from us and only messing with each other. The only issue I had was towards the end, the other two people had left, they starting missing passes and so the puck drifted past me a couple of times but they didn't chase it until I was clear and it was cool.
I can now go backwards decently and can skate several laps at a time backwards. I do a little bit better if I stop thinking about it, except for that one time I started thinking about how to turn while going backwards and my feet thought that was a good idea and I wiped out so hard. I landed mostly on my left knee although I managed to flop sideways so my hip would take some of the force. It hurt. Like, no wonder ice hockey players can't get up sometimes and then they're able to get back in the game later. I stood up and then immediately fell on my butt. So. You know. It's still weird this morning, fine most of the time and then like, occasionally ouchy like when I was sitting on the floor petting Mara and stood up, it hurt.
But I also practiced the thing where you turn around but go in the same direction just backwards. I couldn't get it, I kept stopping by accident, until I figured out how to swing my lower body but not my top and I can now do it while moving at slow speed. It's such a weird feeling and I actually nearly fell because I had gotten it, I didn't expect the swing to be so easy and ended up over balancing in the wrong way.
Since there were so few people, and the couple wasn't there for super long, I was able to spend around half the time going to the right. I keep having issues with my right hip cramping and I think it's because my left leg isn't doing enough pushing. I didn't have that issue when going backwards but I'm not producing enough power there for it to matter. But I worked on this by skating on my left leg and I could rest my right leg a little. There's something wonky with my right crossovers, I can't quite make them work the way the left ones feel. It's like when I bring my left leg over and set it down, it pushes my right leg back too quickly and makes me pitch forward a bit. I just need to practice it more I think.
I did get tired though, and ended up leaving 15 minutes early. I'm skating faster generally and I know I'm tiring out faster because of the backwards skating and all that jazz but holy crap I was fatigued in my body by the end. I think I need to get some core workouts in, I think that's why my lower back is so sore, it's compensating for core muscles that aren't developed enough.
I got home a little after 9 and I got my laundry put away, and then since I was there and looking at them, I boxed up two boxes worth of books to be donated. I'm going to see if I can get them donated tonight and do another load thursday maybe. I need more medium size boxes so I'm going to hit up a liquor store or two and see if I can snag some of their boxes. PS if you ever have to move a lot of books liquor store boxes are the best because they aren't too big but are very sturdy and also generally free.
