 unfortunately I'm not putting in the orchard I'd planned to do this year. I just don't have the money to afford the trees plus netting and I don't know if I'll even have the time to put them in or care for them

there's always next year. 

and maybe I'll spend less money on seeds

Yeah, I'm trying to be realistic about it and not overload myself this year, especially because I'm helping my parents on the farm for realsies this year. Just a day or two on the weekends, but still. We'll see how this year goes.

I got an email from Seed Savers and they were like "INTENSIVE ORCHARD GRAFTING WORKSHOP!" and I momentarily got them confused with Hudson Valley Seed Co and I was like "OMG I'm gonna sign u--- IOWA NEVER MIND"

The netting is so important. :/ Anyway the time to plant trees is 30 years ago so what's one more really?

yeah that's exactly it. the deer are the worst thing so I'd rather wait until I can actually protect them because it would be an even bigger waste of money to put them in and then they get eaten.

lol Iowa is slightly farther than the Hudson Valley. I feel like there's got to be some grafting workshops around.....
