Dec. 24th, 2018 12:24 amanother shot, another deer, continuing my hella beginner's luck.
this was a particularly dumb deer
I went down where we have a little rise and I can see into the field where I mowed the corn ages ago. The deer are munchy crunchying.
I could see three but they were too far and I couldn't find a way to set my spotlight down and still be able to see them with it and make the shot.
I waited to see if they would come closer and two of them wandered off. The last one stayed. It was really dumb because I was able to walk down to the edge of the field and it was too busy eating to notice me.
Not only was I not a stealthy walker, I literally dropped the spotlight at one point. Didn't notice.
I finally knelt down, one knee up, placed the spotlight on my knee and then braced my left arm on the spotlight in the dumbest possible way to do that. But there was nothing to brace against.
I got it though. Through the ribcage high, almost to the spine, so maybe I didn't destroy the shoulderblades this time.
It was a buck. I collected dad and I kinda sorta taught him how to field dress a deer even though it was my second time. We need a saw.
The only issue I had was at the very very end, most of the guts out, but the anus was still connected and the bladder was hanging out down there. I was trying to cut the anus lose and stabbed the bladder. :(
But we rinsed it out and I'm hoping for the best. Hung it with the tractor forks on a beam. It makes it really easy to hang something when you can just pick the whole deer up to the beam.
It also started snowing. Tomorrow is processing day.

Date: 2018-12-24 02:15 pm (UTC)I was more thinking that it's a traditional sequence of "first, let's get the guts out of this" actions and might be useful/interesting. (Though it sounds like you're most in need of better lights!)

Date: 2018-12-24 12:17 pm (UTC)So, lesson learned. I guess it might have had to do with it being a buck, I don't remember the doe being so difficult with the anus.
Venison :)
