well that was interesting
Jan. 31st, 2025 04:18 pmI wrote my last post thurs morning and then did some work stuff. mid-morning I heard a weird noise in the distance, but ignored it because I still wasn't used to the sounds at my parents and there's all sorts of weird noises. it's the country, people shoot things
turns out one of the houses in town blew up and burned down. "town" has 500 people living there and many of the houses are pretty close together right in the center of town. pretty universally everyone has said the boyfriend of the person living there was probably cooking meth. womp womp
My parents were both out for the day doing things, so I was updating them as things developed. Their house is probably a mile from the center of town where the burning house was but I could pretty clearly see the smoke plume over the trees. Then the emergency vehicles headed past into town, seven different nearby townships sent their firetrucks to help. I saw the local town's ambulance leave but not particularly fast and they didn't have their sirens on and it was confirmed later via facebook that the boyfriend had been burned but should be fine eventually.
I went over to the parsonage to keep working on the house and was treated to the show of the firetrucks because they pull around the church (that my parents now own) and refill the trucks out of the creek right there. They probably refilled 15-18 truck loads. My guess is that they were using a lot of water to keep the houses on either side from burning too although they aren't connected, some of the houses are only 10-20 feet apart.
The house is pretty clearly a total loss (my mom showed me video from facebook) and I'm sure there will be an investigation. My parents and I now have to think about if the firetrucks need to refill from the creek while we have an event happening at the church how that should be handled, probably a no parking fire lane along the creek.
In the parsonage, I successfully removed the backing of the heating unit without removing the baseboard heating and removed some ugly fake wood paneling without destroying the heating unit or the ceiling fan. The baseboard backing was easier to remove than I had thought it would be since the nails had only drywall and particle board to stick into. I took down some old curtain rods and things including a mechanical doorbell which was amusing to tap the box and have it make a little ding.
We then met with someone from a state wide farm transition organization, mainly so we don't miss stuff that we just don't think about which was pretty good actually. Gave us some things to do and think about.
Then we went over to the church. The previous congregation folks who are left, the leader is being weird. She's so intent on wrapping things up that she's trying to toss everything in the church out. Just absolutely wants to trash everything. So my parents are trying to slow her down because they want to find documents and things relating to the history of the church because it's neat. So we wandered around and pulled anything we thought we would want to keep for special reasons and set it aside, like the 1938 bible and things like that. The helping hands group is coming tomorrow morning to finish carrying all the things to the basement and they get to take things home if they want and when they're all done, my parents and I will sort through and actually take the trash away and keep some things. Like, the decorations they used for various occasions will be useful to the business so we'll probably keep those, fake flowers and stuff. Only took us an hour or so and we looked at the parsonage to see next steps for that. My parents need to make decisions on flooring and get it ordered as well as paint the walls.
This morning I got up and did a little bit of work stuff first thing, then packed and hit the road. There was also a tasting of haskap jam as a test to see if we want to plant haskaps next year. Jam was delicious, so haskaps are a go if we can get the right varieties. There was a freezing rain warning this morning, so I didn't hit the road early. No problems driving home and then I had my doctors appointment at 3pm.
F has not cleared the driveway well which I'm a little irritated about, she cleared the ramp and the place she parks her car and pretty much nothing else. there are piles of soggy snow in the driveway including where I park. I just popped my truck into 4 wheel and parked there anyway. I thought we got dustings but there was probably 4 or 5 inches before it all got rained on. Thankfully there will be nearly 50F weather monday so I'm hoping it all melts because clearing it would be awful. I guess she doesn't understand that you have to clear it all fully every time because otherwise you cause problems. She didn't use the snowblower. Whatever, not my problem for much longer.
