Today is the last day of the ASL class. I've done well on the exams and things, I'm definitely learning sign quickly. We have our final exam tonight ,which is primarily about Deaf culture, which is fine. That's relevant to the class and language.

However, we have a four page essay due Sunday about a topic. I don't want to write an essay. Essays are boring and annoying. I'm going to spend Sunday writing something I don't want to instead of baking delicious treats since I'm busy most of tomorrow. 

I'm also not super enjoying the homework aspect of it, I haven't done homework in 11 years and I don't like it. I don't remember minding it as a student, but all my time was devoted to being a student and I just can't make myself give a shit about homework now when I have more important things to do like spend time with my friends and family and do housework and make dinner. The optional homework to learn more sign was fine, but the stuff where I had to upload a thing, bleh

Mixed bag tbh. Maybe if I took a class not in a college setting I'd like it more.

Yeah. Achaosofkittens went back to college for a year. He got the highest grades in his math and science classes because he understood what was important and how to study. He also really didn’t enjoy it. So he’s back to taking classes with other adults in hobby topics (e.g. bookbinding and flying) that he cares about where any form of homework is directly relevant to promoting that hobby and not for a grade.

I've run into this a bunch with language classes. I need the structure of a class to get me to learn a language well, but I don't like some of the aspects of it like homework or essays. But I'm also really bad about self directed learning because I just put it off which is why I haven't learned anymore French or Mandarin since college. Maybe I need some kind of language club or learning group. Hmm, I should poke around at my local libraries. It's hard since I don't know any Deaf people, but like, I haven't tried to know any Deaf people so it's a self perpetuating problem. I'll think about it.

Oh I agree! I need classroom structure for language lessons and online/self-directed just doesn’t cut it. I have a Babbel subscription but I haven’t be on it in months. It’s just never a priority over everything else I could do including doomscrolling. Sigh.
