everything in a night
Jun. 13th, 2024 08:39 amLast night I stayed up late reading books, I knew I didn't have early work today and so figured i could stay up a bit. F was getting back not too late she said, but it hit dark so I turned on the porch light and put away the bird feeders.
I was reading two Naomi Novik books, first was Uprooted which I apparently tried reading in 2021, got to the one scene where the MC and the mage she's working with almost have sex and got irritated and returned the book. Well, this time I forwarded through it and the book was amazing. And then at the end there was an excerpt from Spinning Silver and oooh, the library has it....so I read that one too.
Around 10pm, I had the fan running and heard a garbled noise. Thought, huh that sounds like cats fighting. Heard a thump, so got up to investigate and one of F's cats was trying to fight a cat through the screen window and had knocked down the curtains somehow. I shooed him away, set the curtain off to the side, closed the window and watched the black cat outside run away.
F got back late but it was fine
At 3:30 am one of the fire alarms went off. F's security system has some pretty sensitive alarms and it was the basement one going off. I was first up and checking and when I opened the basement door, there was a tiny bit of smoke right there, but as I looked around, nothing else.
We walked around and looked for more smoke but couldn't find any. There was a very faint smell of something in the unfinished part of the basement but I'm a little clogged up with allergies and couldn't pin-point it. Our phones were in the basement with us and the security system will try and reach us but it couldn't so they called the fire dept. F got a hold of them so only two pickup trucks came and investigated. They were cheerful for the hour and told us better to call than not.
I suspect either there was an inversion and people setting off fireworks last night caused the smoke to enter the basement or an outlet broke somewhere in the basement. No breakers tripped, but there's been broken outlets without tripped breakers. I'm going to investigate a little bit today before I have to prepare things and help set up for my coworkers retirement party. No further smoke.
I'm exhausted, had trouble falling back asleep afterwards.
