Saturday I went to a college friend's engagement party. It was actually a gathering of us college crew since only J and I had seen each other since then (e lived together, it doesn't count lol). J2 is across the state and M, who's engagement party it was, lives in California. He moved there after graduation to work for a tech company, J2 works at something engineering. We were a bunch of nerds in college. Not much has changed. We have done some video chats over the years but not with any regularity.

M has been dating about two years with L, and I forgot how they met and they got engaged over the winter sometime. I hadn't ever met L but we did a quick video chat when M asked us to go to the engagement party and wedding and L seemed very nice. They both have large extended Indian families, so the engagement party was in CT for M's family and the wedding is down in NC where L grew up.

I drove down to CT to pick J up from the train station, I took the scenic route, which wound me through beautiful wooded backroads of Massachusetts, past little farms and pretty little houses and nice barns. Really lovely. Then I got to CT and they were very aggressive drivers. Picked up J and we caught up while I drove up to the middle of nowhere where the party was being held. Our instructions for the party were: semi-formal dress, they might do a ceremony and it would mostly be people M's mom invited.

All of these things were true. It was a lovely party. There was delicious food and apparently the custom is to eat and chat quietly while the ceremony is happening. Everyone wandered in and out. M and L did the ceremony and circulated for a while. Then they came and joined the college crew table and we made sure they were drinking enough water and got some food into them.

L is so sweet and so lovely. We were like instant friends. She's also a weaver and had a lot of the same experiences with her weaver's guild. She does something bio-sciencey and is so fun and cheerful and I'm kinda sad she lives in CA because I would love to spend more time with her. I was a little worried the college crew wouldn't be able to get our shit together because we're all awkward nerds but we settled in and got chatting and it was such a nice time.

M asked us to stay until the end and we did, and he kinda wanted to hang out after but L was tired and once we sat down to chit chat in a circle, I think M realized he was really tired, so we sent them off to take M's grandma home. I took J back to the train station and drove home. Got home a little before 7pm, having left around 7am. I was really really tired.

Gotta start figuring out plans for the wedding - hotel and J and I are probably taking the train down.

Next day, made strawberry-rhubarb jam that I put in jammy fruit bars and tried a new recipe from Yesteryear of ricciarelli cookies, which are very tasty but could use less almond and more lemon flavoring. Took them to family dinner and was very tired by the end.

I have been driving a lot for work, running samples and checking traps. More driving tomorrow.
