Wednesday, I dropped my three week old phone and cracked the screen. Results officially in: I need to get one of the super extra durable phones. I've ordered a screen protector to keep the glass in and will keep this one going for a little while longer. I anticipate I will be buying a new phone soon enough and I won't mind. I can't use this phone one-handed which is my biggest complaint about it.

I took a hand building pottery class last night and it was interesting. I thought there would be more instruction but she literally just handed us clay and said we could go to town. I made three small bowls, two spindle whorls and an approximate bird. They need to dry, be fired, we pick them up and glaze them and drop them back off for the final firing. I got an extra lump of clay to bring home and fully plan to make a whole bunch of little thingies to pit fire. Some day I may get a membership and actually use the kiln there and all that jazz but not now. I have vague plans to take a wheel throwing class but that might be in the early spring when I've got more time.

Work alternates between basically no work and so much work. I've harvested melons three times this week. Sweet sweet melons. Taste testing 100% necessary. I drove two hours north yesterday, the hottest day this week, spent the day clipping the runners from strawberries, counting them and then drove home. then went to pottery class. I'm wiped.

I harvested a truly ridiculous amount of tomatoes from my tomato plants. I filled the half flat harvest tote which is idek 24x36in and 8in tall and filled my second smaller container and then had to put some of the tomatoes into an onion bag. First batch of the really squishy ones is now paste in the fridge and I'm working my way through the rest this weekend.

I've been reading many things and got through all the currently out murderbot books. they are very good. the fifth season by NK Jemisin is also excellent and I've got a hold on book three, which I anticipate will resolve in an incredibly dramatic fashion. The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer had some incredibly good plot that I didn't see coming, do recommend, just keep reading through the irritating beginning part, it will make sense later. Each of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro made me cry, it was so good.

Yay books!

Yay tomatoes!

That's kinda a depressing thing for your new phone to do.

Interested in rugged phone recommendations, against that future day?

Unihertz Atom phones are rugged, small, and in the (still pretty small) XL variant include walkie-talkie functionality. Phone plus case plus shipping under 500 USD no problem.

Ulefone Armor (and the budget Armor X) phones are rugged, not-small, large-battery phones. (I have an Armor 9. I like it.) It looks like you'd have to buy one from Big River rather than direct in the States, though that could just be something going on with location cookies. Some models, phone plus case plus shipping under 500 USD no problem. Other models have sticker prices over 500 USD (and infrared cameras, endoscopes, and other nifty stuff.)

Both makers have tossed the "phones are thin" trope -- high end phones are thin because that makes them hard to counterfeit and excuses the gasp-choke prices -- and gone for robust mid-range features in a milled-metal-frames sort of way. Cases remain recommended, but I think these are much better value than high-end phones.

I have a Unihertz Atom L (no walkie-talkie), which I got just over a year ago, and I am very pleased with it. It fits in one hand, I can read my email / dreamwidth / fanfic on it, it has a huge amount of storage space, and also I've dropped it multiple times and it just bounced. It seems fine in the rain too. Cost me a bit under $300.
