Mine is around 3x4 but of stretchy yarn so it covers a little more area than expected. Since I'm crocheting, it's pretty easy to just go until it seems big enough. It covers my lap both directions so if I want it to hang down over my lower legs I can turn it sideways or flop it across my lap and tuck my feet under.
