Last week and upcoming travel
Aug. 15th, 2024 10:07 amI have finished the entire waistcoat and I will make a separate post about it because it's a lot of work and it looks so good and I want to highlight it well, especially once I take nice photos of it. I tried on the whole outfit and realized I needed a tie to make it formal enough without the suit coat, so I made a tie. Turns out, you can make any clothes you want and it's awesome. I still need to hem my pants and maybe my long sleeve shirt if I have time because the sleeves are too long
Late last week, Out in the Open, a rural VT queer org had a last minute call for volunteers to help deconstruct the floor of a timberframe building they had so they could put a new one on. It was a bit of a drive for me, but I went and had a lovely time. It was a bunch of crawling around on beams eight to ten feet in the air, so not bad and unscrewing boards and handing them off to the folks on the ground. I've been putting off going to queer support groups, but give me some construction and manual labor and I'm there. I don't think this is what my therapist had in mind when she encouraged me to get more involved with the local queer community but hey. I'm not that into talking.
Work has not been busy so I'm trying to get some things done, although they're mostly fun things. I'm washing a fleece today, I just bought supplies to put up a laundry line in the backyard and more mouse traps. Plus supplies to refresh the great wheel.
I'm still watching the olympics although a little slower than I had been. The climbing final and equestrian team jumping were both excellent and I'm watching individual jumping now.
Next week I'm going to a friend's wedding in Raleigh, NC, travelling with former roommate J. We decided to take the train down, because flights are expensive and annoying and driving 10 hours is also terrible. So we will depart NYC for Raleigh and take a 10 hour train. We'll have a day in Raleigh for fun and the wedding and then the train back. I'm spending two extra nights in NYC because the trains to and from home don't work to catch the long train timing wise. In an ideal world, we'd spend more time down there, but it's summer and work and farm stuff is going to pick up in the next few weeks, and J is traveling to Germany for a different friend's wedding a day and a half after we get back.
So I have about 25 hours of travel to entertain myself. I'm sure we'll have access to an outlet since we usually do. I'm planning to bring one small suitcase and one backpack. I decided not to bring my computer since it's a short trip and that's one more big thing to bring. Here's my vague entertainment plan:
masking on the train will be annoying but the private rooms were very expensive so I'm just going to deal with it.
We won't have too far to go to the hotel when we arrive, the most annoying part will be lugging my stuff around NYC to J's place and maybe meeting with my sister if she doesn't have work.

- cotton spindle and lots of cotton
- 3 physical books
- 3-4 books on my phone
- install peacock app on phone so I can watch more olympics replays (it's almost the paralympics!)
- podcasts - I pretty consistently have a 30 hour backlog, so I could make a dent in it
- notebook and pens - I usually bring these on camping trips for thinking thoughts
- knitting? - I'm torn on this one because my sweater is just the sleeves left so it's bulky but I could probably really get some knitting done on the train with it.
- snacks, so many snacks. Currently planning to bake sables, hazelnut cookies, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, corn cheese jalapeno muffins and eat lots on the trip. It doesn't look like there's meals included with the train. Maybe one more savory thing....probably should do sandwiches or something.
