July Crafting Update and August Goals
July goals
Tablet woven bands. I tried doing writing with weaving in a fancy font, which needs fine threads for it. I tried upholstery thread. This was a mistake. It has so little give that the tension had serious problems and it wouldn't stay woven, so it would unravel anytime I put it away. Didn't finish it since some of the tablets turned when I had put it away and I don't think I had enough warp to finish the saying. Interesting experiment and the letters look good but it had to go.
I wove these three little bands for fun. The rainbow and the blue band were woven with all four tablets threaded and alternating directions that the cards were facing to get the chevrons. The purple band was woven with edge tablets having 4 threads per and the interior cards have two per to get the pebble/brick pattern.
Weaving! This was the leftovers of the mohair warp that I did bad math for, ran out of the same color weft and so I spun up grey mohair roving from Giant Cricket Farm since that's where the fleece came from and did herringbone instead. No plans for it.
Almost done with the waistcoat! I'm definitely not experienced in tailoring but it's turned out better than I thought it would a few days ago. It still needs buttons and buttonholes and after that I'll do glamour shots of it. I worked on it this morning, got it all sewn up and immediately realized I had mucked up one of the shoulder seams where I hadn't overlapped the front enough and the mohair doesn't hold the weave past the stitching I put in to hold the weave, so it was going to unravel. I unpicked the stitches and re-sewed them by hand since it would be more annoying to undo the bottom to pull it inside out and fix it that way. I can see some of the things that aren't quite perfect are definitely affected by the mohair fabric which is definitely not ideal for tailoring projects.
Great Wheel! My dad texted me that a neighbor was selling it, so I asked him to grab it and he did! It's huge! It needs two pegs, one to hold up the miner's head and one to tension it. It also needs a good cleaning and reconditioning. Apparently it sat for at least 60 years on someone's covered porch and probably came from a local farm. It actually has two miner's heads which both can be set up with an accelerator wheel, which isn't included, so I'll search one out. It can be set up for direct drive. It's big! The wheel covered most of the back of the width of my truck, so probably 45 inch diameter.
August goals
- Spin the CVM - done! Just finished it on the 30th, it took me about a month to spin 3oz. Started another spinning project that is 4oz of combed top to spin on my electric wheel around. Also just started 8oz of Romney roving on the CPW. Did some Tour de Fleece spinning, where my goal was to spin every day, which I did, mostly on my spindle spinning of cotton
- Knit sweater - worked on it a tiny bit
- twist fringe on shawl for guild sale - did the yellow one, working on the pink one, bought a fringe twister because it was getting tedious
- finish weaving on the loom and start warping next project - finished! Got the sample for the next one almost on the loom
- work on tablet weaving - cut the project off the loom, it really wasn't working, don't weave with upholstry thread, wove three other little bands
- Sew the waistcoat - almost done! just buttons to go
- wash a fleece? - nope
- process fleece - worked on it
- engage in shenanigans (already happening >:) I went out and collected some nettles and invasive phragmites from the swamp this morning) - no more shenanigans but I might do this again soon. And I acquired a great wheel :) :) :)
