My answer to this (last night) would have been that the heavy machinery clearing the office building parking lot of snow back up a lot, and thus beep loudly and in carrying tones.
The more usual answers involve "dinner disagreed", "brain weasels", and "there was a noise, but you don't remember the noise, you're just awake".
Ha! It must have been needing to pee and being too warm. But it also could have been my dog moving around. Thankfully I did get back to sleep and had a lazy morning before work. Still tired but less than 3 in the morning!
When I was wee-small, the dog would sleep next to one of the woodstoves which was also next to a big sheet of metal spaced from the wall just in case the woodstove really outdid itself with radiant heat. The dog would have good dreams and wag its tail into the metal sheet. Never woke the dog up.
It's still sorta desultorily snowing here; I just moved so don't have a snow shovel and they've all been put away for Spring! at the hardware stores. I miss old-school hardware stores.
