NWHL All Star Weekend
I kept meaning to write this post at home because it's easier to do pictures on my computer but I keep forgetting. So no pictures except maybe on my instagram.
I went to the NWHL All Star Weekend! It was awesome and amazing!
It was in Boston this year, and I brought Jade along and we made a weekend of it.
The Skills Competition was 8pm Saturday and the Game was 2:30 Sunday, so we drove to Boston Saturday morning. I just parked in the ice arena's parking garage because I'd been there once before and it was easier. Then we walked maybe 15 minutes to the nearest light rail line and took that into downtown. It was maybe an hour total time but totally worth it because parking was lots cheaper and I didn't have to drive in Boston proper, which would have been a nightmare.
We got off the subway right at the cemetary where Paul Revere was buried and it had all sorts of neat graves, so that was super cool. Then we walked to the aquarium where we saw all kinds of coolio fish and penguins. It was very good. A little smaller than I expected but very neat.
Then we headed back to the arena and one of the other fans on twitter/twitch had organized a meetup, so we met up with them and got burgers that were decent but very close to the arena. They were all lovely people and I ended up hanging out with them all weekend. We got in line to get into the arena very early and then checked out the merch once we got in and I'm glad because I got a great hoodie and a signed puck. I also got a picture with the Isobel Cup, which is very shiny.
The Skill Competition was incredible! It's a lot of fun to watch and probably to participate. I think my favorite event was the relay race, which was hysterically funny and very fast. They did some great on ice interviews with the winners of each event including one where Anya Packer interviewed her wife and called her the first loser of the shooting event, to which Madison gave her a very bad and funny interview.
Then Jade and I went back to the hotel I booked, which was a funky artsy hotel but in a tasteful way. I was amazed. I didn't know artsy things could be tasteful. It was Studio Allston Hotel and it was only $160 per night, which was much cheaper than most of the hotels in the area. I highly recommend because it was a very nice hotel. One of the elevators had party music and lights.
Then sunday, we hung around in the hotel until checkout time because I was very tired, staying up past my bedtime and I also didn't sleep super well, which is typical. The breakfast they served had the best muffins ever.
At 11:15, there was a skating with the All Stars event at the arena, which actually ended up being mostly take pictures with players and skate around a bit. I stuck with one of my new meetup friends because she couldn't skate and sometimes needed to be pulled around with her skate support. I also skated over and asked players to take pictures with us because she just couldn't go fast. I attempted to teach her a little but I was not very good at it.
During the skate, Hanna Beattie came over to me! and said they saw my sign!! and said she was glad I could make it and they liked that they could tell when I was around because of my signs!!! I was amazed she recognized me because omg she'd seen me TWICE in the autograph line and somehow recognized me on the ice and not wearing any whale gear. It was SO COOL.
So that was a blast.
Then the actual All Star Game happened at 2:30 and it was so much fun! It was exciting and there were a few penalties but no one was really playing like it was a regular game with a lot of contact. It was super cool and fun to watch. I wanted to stay for autographs but I knew the line would be really long and we hit the road. There was a minor issue that I had forgotten to eat enough during the day, and snapped at Jade but I apologized. I ate two pieces of pizza on the drive home, which actually was a mistake because it made me really tired. We had taken my truck and Jade can't drive stick so I had to power through. We made one pit stop which helped and then we were home by 8ish.
It was so much fun. I wish I had taken monday off work because I think the extra day of laying around would have really helped me because I am still so tired from it. But there were things I had to get done monday. omg fun. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get to another one, but it was so much fun and so wonderful to go to.
