ugh, nearly got into a car accident earlier. Came up to a red light and for some reason either didn't see this car or they were lined up with the parked cars or something because I turned when it went green and suddenly there was a car there. I hit the brakes hard and backed up so they could go by but it was just ugh. I'm normally a pretty careful driver and I check before turning a lot so I don't know how I missed them.

I know it doesn't feel like it, but sometimes a miss is as good as a mile.

Glad it was a miss!

I've had someone back out of a parking spot in front of me with an apparent entire disregard for the idea of oncoming traffic, so who knows what they were up to. And sometimes people literally don't see things, too; one reason driving-while-tired statistically goes badly.

People aren't all that good at seeing. The stuff that fakes seeing is excellent, though, so we mostly don't notice.

There are tricks about changing the angle and distance you're looking -- high, low, near, far, left, right sorts of things -- but those are not always appropriate to driving!
