The Three-Body Problem

I had a similar reaction when I read it, though I did finish it. It felt like those old sci fi books where all the characters are just mouthpieces for the author to expound on some theory or other. The Supernova Era was the same, so I think I'm done with Liu's books.

The Goblin Emperor

So good! I read it because I went to a talk by Guy Consolmagno (director of the Vatican Observatory) about living in an actual feudal monarchy and he recommended it as being a much more accurate take on pre-modern government than most fantasy books.
