Color blocks are a great idea. I've also enjoyed the Rings of Change crochet pattern, which makes a wonderful blanket, which I did in a brown alpaca yarn that I got on discount and then finished with some alpaca yarn that I spun up in black, it's very pretty and dramatic looking.
