I grew up with dogs. We had a three legged dog named Rascal when I was very young. We got a lab named Rex after. He was hit by a car when I was 9.

Then we adopted Ptera, who was an incredibly intelligent dog. She listened really well and hunted mice and rats and even caught a woodchuck once. She loved going across the road with us when we sent to work and would run around for hours. Three years ago we adopted a puppy, Iggy, and they play fought a lot but it was great to have two dogs in the house because they kept each other company.

Since me and Jade are moving into a house soon, we can get pets and I want to adopt an older dog, since we just don't have the time for a puppy. And tonight at the market, there were three dogs I was watching goof around and I was taking pictures.

But I was driving home from the market when I got a call from my younger sibling that Ptera had died. She was fine this morning, but started having issues part way through the day. They took her to the vet and found an issue with her stomach that would only be fixed through a lot of surgeries and had a small chance of success, even in a healthy dog. Ptera was around 12 years old

So they put her down.

I'm going to miss her a lot. She was so smart and so great and so fun to play with. She loved sleeping behind the wood stove and in the sun. And I know missing them when they're gone is part of living with animals, which I'm fine with. I hope Iggy doesn't take things too badly.

I still plan to adopt a dog, but maybe I'll wait a little while
